And last time I checked the difference between an undefeated Larry Holmes and today's Evander Holyfield is night and day.

Who's saying it isn't? But, you were the one saying that Ray Austin probably can't beat Evander, explain that please.

My post was meant to be sarcastic, in the face of this:

Stiff challenge of a well past his prime Larry Holmes. Ray Austin could probably beat Holyfield right now, so what?
Anyone who can justify this comparison is pretty pathetic.

Let's try to stick to the topic, as much as it pains you.

Please tell me how you can compare a 35 year old, 47-0 heavyweight champ's title defense to a 47yr old shot ex-champion?

Carl Williams was a decent fighter but just had a poor chin, he looked very good against Larry Holmes and Bert Cooper.

Agreed. And I think the poor chin rep sorta hurt him against Tyson - he was stunned but not out on his feet or anything when the fight was stopped.

I'd rank him right ahead of Vitali

Most forget it wasn't just a punch in Tyson...Mike (by accident) caught him with the hook and blasted him on a weave coming the other direction, head connecting right on Williams chin a second after the punch. Funny stuff.

I'm not comparing, I'm stating that a decent losing performance against a past his prime champion has as much relevance as if Ray Austin beat Evander Holyfield nowadays, which is to say, none.
