what does martinez walk around at?? maybe since the fight was such short notice, martinez would be taking too much weight off too fast for short camp... whatcha think?

Why fight a Super Welter at Middleweight

bat nailed the reason .. and look at it from the perspective of Sergio Martinez
he fights at 160 no title on the line, I can see that part of it, but why would Williams want the fight at Middle?

Paul has made Super Welter in the past and is currently the interim WBO belt holder

and this past April he weighed in at 157 vs Wright .. so unless something drastic happened

pretty sure P-Will can still make 154.

-the weight drain is certainly possible, however I'd think that making the higher weights would be easier on Williams body ... especially considering in his most recent Middle and Junior Middle fights, Paul's never came in at the max .. meaning he either kills himself to make the weight or has little to no difficulty to make the weight

compared to Welter .. I don't see why Williams can't just jockey between 154 and Middle

hell at this point I think it's safe to say that 154 and above is more along the lines of P-Will's divisions and for the time being Welter will not get consideration from him

Boxing is hilarious because this fight is not even a true fight, its just clearly a business move from both of their perspectives.
-exactly, but even if Segio wasn't getting more money ... why not move up and fight vs Williams? unless Martinez gets brutally knocked out or tooled all 12 rounds it's a win win situation for him

-I guess this is hilarious, but doesn't it kinda piss you off? if Williams can make 154, why not just fight at the weight?

-agree, it isn't a "real fight" so to speak, but I find this frustrating. I know the WBC Super Welter isn't the Holy grain of titles

but what does Williams gain by fighting a smaller man outside of his weight class?

**it's the little things like these why many people say boxing is falling off

      too many business moves.

Paul Williams first fight at 160 was against Andy something some bum to test how good he was at 160. I like when fighters do that because that makes more sense overall.

You know how ******ed it was for Pavlik to fight at 170 against Hopkins when Hopkins was one of the best around 170-175 weight class. Very dumb move!
paul has had two fights at 160... hardly doubt he is already elite with that weight...

Damn, even harder task for Sergio now. As much as I would like Martinez to win I can't see it. Williams will just be to big, to strong and throw's to many punchers.

Williams by UD or late TKO!

I already hit you back with a lengthy response on the top of the page. peep if you like.

agreed. I want to know as well. Why wouldn't Williams want to follow up on that Interim WBO title and win a full one (the WBC)?

This is obviously a disadvantage for Martinez and a major advantage for Williams. williams will come in at 175 on fight night. Martinez will be 154 because thats his weightclass. This fight won't prove anything for Williams but if Martinez wins thats impressive.

Man I hope that Martinez is at least in good shape, 30 days is not enough to train for someone like Paul.

I think there are way to many divisions anyways... thirty years ago would we even be having this discussion about 154 or 160... who cares?? two great fighters are fighting, thats all that should matter...

Haters will undoubtingly say a P. Will victory doesnt matter since its not at 154. I said this fight wouldnt be at 154, Williams has already had a title there before so getting another one isnt on his to do list, also with or without a title, nobody wants to fight him, if he stays at 160, maybe someone will step to the plate.
