I think he would only defeat Mike Tyson after the buster Douglas fight. Not pre buster Douglas. I think the mentally fit mike tyson that got used to feasting on bums and washed up champions from the 80s would be too much offensively for James Toney and win on the cards. But the mike tyson that got folded by Douglas and the tyson after that fight, yea Toney would beat that tyson.

James Toney is more so too defensive fighter that sometimes thats too many hits. I think to beat that tyson. You gotta fight fire with fire. When buster Douglas got up from the canvas he was ready to risk it all. I am sorry but James toney mentally sometimes isnt there.
As farcical as it is, it would probably be a top 3 Mike Tyson W.
Mike vs Toney below HW and it would be a different outcome.

Once King and his goons took control, Mike was all about living the hype.
    No dedication or respect
    Was still fed bums

I would have loved to see if Toney's chin could have withstood the shots.

Think about guys who went he distance with prime Mike Tyson, I think Tyson to blast toney out early is a wild pick, far less skilled fighters than toney went the distance.

        Every fighter who went the distance with Mike Tyson during that time frame would beat James Toney at HW easily;

        James Tillis
        Bonecrusher Smith
        Tony Tucker
        Razor Ruddock

            Strongly disagree

You dudes are still buying the myth

Half of Tysons power came from his intimidation, most of his opponents in the 80s went in the ring on the verge of a panic attack gulping down air, shaking.

As soon as he threw a combination they found a safe place on the floor.

As soon as Tyson stepped up to world level and fought a guy who had zero fear of him (Holyfield) all of a sudden Tyson can't punch no more.

Tyson vs Toney is one of the most overrated fighters of all time vs one of the most underrated.

I give the edge to Toney. He would likely give Mike a mental breakdown in the build up when Mike realizes he can't bully him.

No you are buying the myth. The myth that James Toney is anything but garbage at HW.

Can’t bear Sam Peter in two tries or a passed it Hasim Rahman and somehow you have him beating a prime Mike Tyson That is non sensical and not based any where near reality.

He showed nothing in his career at any point that he could even beat a capable HW in the worst era in HW history, let alone an elite HW, let alone a prime Mike Tyson.

Toney was WAY past his prime by the time he moved up to heavyweight

I'm assuming we are talking about a young pre CTE toney vs a prime Tyson

Not prime Tyson vs shot old toney

Mike Tyson lost to Jake Paul btw.

Toney was very talented. But he wasnt a heavyweight. Sure tyson has beat heavyweights who would beat toney because of size, but Toney was better pfp is what im getting at, im not implying toney has a resume of anything at heavyweight or achieved much there. So tyson beats toney, you agree dont you?

NihonJim You mean real HWs of high repute at the time?

Toney is 5'9 and was a flabby 220ish at HW with no real power how is he going to hold Tyson off?

Especially recently I thought we had disproved size at heavyweight meaning that much.

                      Toney is 5'9" Tyson 5'10"

Toney doesn't need to stop Tyson just frustrated him enough that he has a mental breakdown and foul himself out of the fight, I think toney can do it.
