Both guys carried more than their share of boxings overall popularity on their shoulders, probably more so Floyd but it applies to Canelo too. You take Floyd away from 2007-2015 or Canelo away from the post-Floyd/Pac era and the sport as a whole is in a much worse state from a commercial perspective.

Pacquiao resurrected boxing. Floyd was in retirement crying. He avoided fights, then came back when everyone fought one another and battle weary. Fans wanted to see him lose when he came back. Most hated personality in boxing.

Yet, it was no different than almost any other Mayweather fight. The difference has always been the opponent. People came to support his dance partner in hopes of seeing them give Fraud the "L". That is what sold. That is what got people to pack the arenas.
