So, Wilder`s claim to fame is...

It's not so impressive when you remember that he only ever held 1 out of the 4 recognised championship belts and never fought, let alone beat, any of the other world title claimants during his reign.
And it's even less impressive when you consider the fact that he got destroyed by the only prime, top tier opponent he ever fought.Last edited by kafkod; 06-30-2023, 05:20 PM.Comment

title defenses against who though? its worthless if you arent beating good comp and wilder was not beating good comp. lets compare things. joe louis has 14 top 10 wins in his defenses(many against guys ranked 1, 2, or 3) not to mention he beat a much better fighter in order to win the lineal title. wilder has 2 top 10 wins in his defenses...against the same guy who was ranked 5th and then 6th.
I should have clarified "consecutive title defenses" or title defenses in a single reign. Ali had multiple reigns but his longest reign was 10 consecutive title defenses. Only 4 fighters can claim to have done better in the entire history of HW boxing. Here's the list:
1. Joe Louis – 25*
2. Larry Holmes – 19
3. Wladimir Klitschko – 18
4. Tommy Burns – 11
5T. Muhammad Ali – 10
Deontay Wilder – 10
7T. Joe Frazier – 9
Lennox Lewis – 9
Vitali Klitschko – 9
10. Jack Johnson – 8
ali had 7 of his first 9 defenses against top 10 guys, then 8 out of 10 in his next title run, ali has 26 top 10 wins overall in his career to wilders 3. ali has beaten 17 top 3 fighters to wilders 1. its a simple quality vs quantity argument. wilder would have a grand total of 0 defenses if he was in the 1 belt era which you arent factoring in.Last edited by daggum; 06-30-2023, 05:44 PM.Comment

You could say the same about Vitali. What’s his best win?
It's not so impressive when you remember that he only ever held 1 out of the 4 recognised championship belts and never fought, let alone beat, any of the other world title claimants during his reign.
And it's even less impressive when you consider the fact that he got destroyed by the only prime, top tier opponent he ever fought.
As I said, very good champion, weak era.
10 consecutive defences is historically impressive. Very few HW’s got to that number.Comment

It's crazy to be comparing Wilder to Ali anyways.

But the fault isn't all Wilder's. I think the Alphabet organizations have a lot to do with it, because they remove top guys for pursuing title shots with other organizations, etc, and with four of them in the mix, the level of competition gets drastically dropped. Wilder was making his mandatory defenses, which means he was by definition fighting the top ranked guys at the time by the organization that sanctions his belt. He's not responsible for the WBC giving those shots to undeserving fighters, nor for the era being weak.
Many of the same criticisms leveled against Wilder would also apply to, say, Tyson Fury. But he doesn't get called overrated yet, although I guarantee that NSB will turn against him in a heartbeat if he loses to Usyk (or Ngannou, Jones, or AJ).

but you arent comparing similar things because there werent 4 belts until recently, and also historically champs fought good top 10 fighters, wilder didnt. it seems like you are impressed by wilder gaming the system, instead of looking at his woeful resume. if someone has 50 defenses against unranked fighters...historically impressive? no of course not. what wilder did was very close to that. much closer to that then what guys like ali, louis, etc...didComment
