He trains under Ismael Salas who has trained many southpaws and probably has unrivalled success going head-to-head vs them (pro and amateur). He couldn't have had a better trainer by his side. He has had a good 20-25+ world champions - Many southpaws and many who have beaten southpaw opposition to become world champion. He competed amateur and was head coach of the Cuban national team.
This is not a trainer problem. Joyce is what he is!
He lead face first and fought in the same manner under Abel Sanchez among others
I am sure his preparation was as good as can be its not like you can just find 6'6, 270lb southpaws that are two-handed fighters for sparring.
