I think Shields being patient is the key to her potentially being a force in MMA. I'll point out two key moments from the fight. Round 2, Shields was looking good, had her in a good position on the floor, tried to lunge into a flying punch, missed, got pulled into a lock, never got out until the final 15 seconds, where she did some great work to be fair.
Then round 3, she's aggressive, but she was waiting for Elkin to try and land before going for broke, watch where Elkin tries to land a big kick, Shields moves back, then comes and throws a massive single shot, that shot, won her the fight. The patience, and awareness, the calculated aggression that was lacking in the earlier rounds, came to the fold.
In MMA with those small gloves, her hands are fire. Way above and beyond anything Amanda Nunes can throw with her hands. She needs a lot of work, but I liked what I saw, and her composure under pressure, considering it was her debut, was very impressive.bballchump11 likes this.

It's the ground game that's always going to be the main concern for people crossing over I feel. She fought a handpicked opponent with not much of a ground game and it was still a problem. Which is expected really.
It's not something you can just pick up quickly/easily late in life. So they'll have to be careful with their matchmaking. If moving up in level of opponents is a target then it's going to be a big ask to try build up a stronger wrestling and grappling game if you're committed to both boxing and MMA careers at the same time.

MMA is an easy sport for high level boxers to enter. However they have to be relatively young. Most MMA fighters come from one discipline. That might be wrestling, Kickboxing, BJJ etc. Then as young adults they learn the other areas of the game. A boxer would be no different.
If you look at two of the best champions in UFC. Both Adesanya and Ngannou came from striking sports and learned to grapple as adults.
A hard hitting athletic boxer young enough to dedicate 4-5 years to MMA would be a nightmare. You only need 'talent' in one area. You can get by being decent at the rest and have huge success.
