Roy was clearly not the same fighter after the move back down from heavyweight. His reflexes were slowed, the number of punches he threw went way down, and he spends most of fights sitting back doing nothing. A prime Roy struggles with decent boxers? The same Roy who beat Bernard Hopkins and James Toney, who are better than Tarver could ever dream of being?

Prime Tarver may give prime Roy a fight like the Hopkins fight, where Roy didn't kill Hopkins but he definitely won, and that's Tarver's best case scenario. The trash he talked, he probably motivates Roy to knock him out.

      realistic view...

jones was tarver's big motivation, so credit him for fighting his way up to getting a shot at jones...credit jones for moving back down from heavy to face the #1 lightheavy contender and showing some heart in gutting out a win on tarver which turned out to be his last hurrah...

i think jones rivalry with tarver had some similiarities to his rivalry with montel griffin...i thought in the rematch jones was looking to end things with tarver early much the way he went after griffin and got caught himself...

I think most people feel this way. Tarver fought Roy at the right time. Tarver woulda simply been another one of Roy's victims if they had fought a few years earlier.

He has wins over a past prime Roy Jones, Eric Harding, Montell Griffin, and Glen Johnson. At the same time he lost to Eric Harding, Glen Johnson, got destroyed by Bernard Hopkins, was beat thoroughly by Chad Dawson, and was outpointed clearly by a weight drained Roy Jones. I think it bothers him that people don't give him more respect, but his career is not that great. I give him credit for beating superman, but if it was before the Ruiz fight the outcome would have been different.
If you look at Tarvers career he is not nearly as good as he thinks he is. I'll give him credit for beating Jones but outside of that nothing spectacular. Also the fact that Jones was past his prime is not debatable to me. He had almost three times the amount of fights Tarver had. That takes it's toll.

I think Tarver would have given Jones problems in his prime but I don't see him winning. If Jones had the same stamina as he did years ago he might have stopped Tarver in that third fight.

That's funny. You do realize that Tarver is older than Roy right?

Tarver started his career much later than most boxers do though. He didn't have the ring wear that Roy did when they fought. Tarver started as a pro in 1997, Roy started in 1989.

It is funny, you do realize Tarver only had 22 professional fights, meanwhile Roy had 50.......on TOP of coming down 20lbs of muscle right?

Tarver would've always given Jones problems. He's just a stylistic nightmare for him. Jones has always struggled with tall lanky amateurs - those who could fight, anyway.
