I hear a lot of people call him the greatest fighter ever.
That's different from calling him the #1 heavyweight.
yea you got a point, based on resume he is the greatest HW fighter ever. Based on performance though..hmm debatable. I don't think all his wins were so conclusive that he would beat any boxer in the history of the sport. Any of the top dogs could/did give him trouble. Some of them beat him.
Frazier beat him, Norton beat him, Holmes beat him so bad I'd give him a shot prime for prime as well.
All good fighters of course, then the ugly losses to Spinks, ugly fights with Cooper, gift stoppages to Lyle...would have lost to Frazier again.
I can do this with any fighter though, Holyfield is my favorite HW and he's got what 10+ losses? lol
there os no issue that a prime Tyson(80s) would have beaten Lewis.
Remember one thing about Lewis. He faught alot of fighters that were over the top when he faced them. Tucker, Bruno, Holyfield,Tyson,Mercer and Tommy Morrison.
He lost to times against weak opponents and he faced alot of fighters that were up and coming and later showed they were nothing Golota, Briggs, Mavrovich and so on...
A fight against Bowe, that was signed for Mars 95 was canselled when he lost to McCall, would be hes hardest test.
i have followed both fighters and Lewis is one of the best heavyweights. But Tyson had a fantastic defense when he was trained by Rooney that alot of people seems to forget. And he was the biggest puncher in the divison.

And Tyson beat who exactly?
Rahman and McCall werent as weak as Buster Douglas.
The fight was cancelled when Chicken Bowe dumped his belt in the bin after refusing to fight Lennox.
I dont mind people arguing for Tyson but come with some proper arguments. The Tyson defence thing was probably the best thing you said
That video is ridiculously biased towards modern fighters - the only old timers in there are Pep and (if you can really count him as an old timer, because he only turned pro in 1958) Locche. How can Hamed and Tyson possibly be better defensively than people like Ray Robinson, Jack Johnson, or even Ali (whose defence was poor technically but who rarely took a clean punch in his prime)? Even in the modern era there are plenty of fighters who weren't included with better defences than Hamed or Tyson, such as Hopkins and Roy Jones.
Fun video to watch but terribly biased choice of fighters, IMO.
You completly missed the whole point of me posting that video, IMO.
*Sigh*, We've already done this a few times. Perhaps, the only fight that's discussed more here is Tyson vs ALI.
Tyson, even during his prime, always had trouble with bigger fighters. He struggled with Bonecrusher Smith and had his hands full against Tony Tucker. He beat Mitch Green but he should have beaten him easily. Green was already washed up by the time Mike got to him.
Lennox is WORLDS better than any of the men Tyson struggled against. If Tyson can't hurt or score an opponent his hands are full. He CAN hurt Lennox but the trick is HITTING him without being hit often himself.
Tyson is faster but Lennox has the range on him. Either he would attack first or tie Tyson up after scoring a few big punches in the early rounds. It's not likely that he would use option one, though he could if he chose. He usually attacks bigger opponents.
People don't realize how hard Lennox can hit. Tyson has power but Lennox has it as well. He didn't always use his power to it's fullest potential but he does have it. I dare say Lennox is in the top class of Hvt. when it comes to Power. BIG GEORGE has the top spot to himself, unless you include non-champions, in which case Forman shares the Top spot with Ernie Shavers.
In the next class you have TYSON, LEWIS and LISTON.
Next you have Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano just before Dempsey and Frazier. If I were to pick a few contenders I would say Ken Norton and Razor Ruddock would be in this class as well. In fact, Ruddock is in the same class with Tyson, Lewis and Liston. He certainly punches as hard as Tyson. Tyson just takes a better punch and makes better use of his power.
Who can forget the way Lennox finished off Andrew Golota, or the way he lifted Frans Botha off his feet? This was with long range punches. If Lennox gets close his power becomes greater.
Lennox would score early and get Mike's attention. He doesn't have Mike's speed but Mike has to come close in order for his speed to be an advantage. He also has to pay a price for his defiance. Lennox stuns him early. Mike usually changes his game plan if you get his attention.
Now Lennox has control of the pace of the fight. If Mike isn't allowed to dictate a fight early on, and if his opponent can stick to a game plan, he usually becomes discouraged as the fight progresses. Sometimes he will still have enough to catch a man, like he did with Bruno who tied him in knots early.
This fight would be a bit different from their actual fight, but would the outcome be different?
Lennox would not allow for all of what Bruno allowed Tyson to do. Bruno never knew how to use the uppercut. NO Big Man used it as well as Lennox uses it. Tyson would catch a few too many of those in the middle rounds. Though there are many differences between Tyson and Joe Frazier, Lennox would fight both in a similar way. Frazier would not take many of those uppercuts early. He would fall before the 4th.
The Tyson that knocked out Spinks crushes any version of Lennox Lewis.
And how exactly does Mike Spinks remind you of Lennox Lewis? One was a giant heavyweight with solid skills, the other was a frightened lightheavy there to cash a paycheck.
Nothing in boxing history is more overrated than Tyson's defense. It looked great for 2-3 rounds. After that he was just another flat footed heavyweight.

Mike wouldn't last much longer.
Lewis by KO in 9
you can say the same for Lewis, Mike stopped Bruno in 3, Lewis went late rounds w/ him.
Mike is way better then Rahman.
on top of that, Lewis best wins were fighters mike already beat.
On top of that, Lewis fought an washed up old Mike, the same Tyson that loses to guys like Mcbride, and it took him 8 rounds.
As for tucker, an old drug washed Tucker gave Lewis just as much trouble as he did Mike, only against mike he was prime.

nothing is more overated then Ali's defense. floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee only worked against Liston, the rest of his career was him getting hit flush and being tough enough to come back.
not a knock, just by heavyweight standards Mike had good defense. p4p, yea it's nothing.
