You know if there was the internet back in the day there would be hundred's of threads calling Sugar Ray Robinson a fraud and a coward for quitting against Joey Maxim despite the fact he was fighting for the LHW title when he came in under the MW limit

Yeah man, Ray weighed in at a measly 157½ pounds for that fight!

He's referring to the Joey Maxim fight at 175 lbs. I believe it was for Maxim's LWH title and SRR could not continue due to the sweltering heat in the ring. I think they had to switch out the referee at one point because the referee had collapsed from exhaustion.

In a sense he did "quit". Yes he may have died if he had continued but he still "quit" according to some because boxers are supposed to fight to the death or whatever.

Now obviously in the minds of any sensible fight fan Robinson did not quit nor was he a coward but it's something to think about.

It's totally understandable as to why he didn't come out and finish the fight. 105 degrees at ringside! Shocking. It'd already gone 13 rounds and Ray didn't come out for the 14th. Damn shame, really, considering he was ahead on the cards and everything.

I don't see why a fighter has to risk injury to somehow prove his mascualinity when the sheer fact that he's getting in the ring makes him more of a man than 99% of the Earth's population.

Some of you guys need to realize the boxing isn't and shouldn't be a life a death struggle. It's a ***ing sport and even if every boxing fan in the world fell over and died there would still be people in gym's learning the sweet science out of sheer love for the sport.
