        I think so!

        Seriously, T?

I can't even watch it now. They should have dubbed the fight "UNWATCHABLE", but I guess they didn't know it would be that bad, so "BATTLE OF THE PLANET" it was.

I'm not saying it's Gatti-Ward or anything, but i've watched the fight 4 times or so now, and every time I found it pretty entertaining! I guess I must just be odd

No way Hopkins won round 8, gave 7 to Calzaghe too.

4:15 story of the fight pretty much sums it up...Calzaghe won the "decision" technically due to throwing more punches...Hopkins won the "fight".. in many peoples eyes, landed harder shots through out and he didnt even really fight much..A win is a win even an ugly one

Nah, I don't think you're odd. People like different kinds of fights. I mean, I can't stand watching the Klitchko's but other people love them. Whatever floats your boat.

Compared to older fights from both fighters (Hopkins-Johnson/Trinidad was great, Calzaghe-Lacy/Eubank/Kessler was great) the Hopkins-Calzaghe fight was just f'king awful. I think that's what I'm basing it on. Both of 'em disappointed me greatly.

Watching that video back there's some good shots landed by Calzaghe which don't get much attention from the commentators. But they are right, think it was Emmanuel, in that Calzaghe was increasingly adapting to just shorten his punches and score. That's what he had to do, against a defensive master whom was running and very illusive.

So your never going to see Hopkins beaten well, with them looking good. We never have and never will. So why should it shock Calzaghe couldn't do that, when that style doesn't suite him at all.

I scored it for Calzaghe by 2 rounds I think, I change sometimes but even though some rounds were close, if anything I'd push it to 3 rounds Calzaghe and certainly not the other way. So there's no way it was 114-113 to Hopkins as the one judge scored it, which was very indifferent to the other judges 115-112 and 116-111. I think people forget that disparity there, 116-112 is more than Taylor ever managed, and one measley judges scored it one point to Nard, that's a very thin SD, and pretty damn close to a MD or UD really.

You look at Nard in his fight before and fight after, he was doing what was Calzaghe's worst nightmare, being illusive, dirty, defensive, countering and holding, and nearly did enough to nick it. But it wasn't enough. A Hopkins coming forwards more get's hit more and loses clearer, so he was doing what he was doing because it was a sound game plan in all fairness to him, as dirty as it was, and in some points too much so. But still, an interesting style match up in those respects at least.

I felt Hopkins was winning the fight, but ultimately he is to blame for NOT winning the fight (not the judges/refs/etc) for simply not doing enough late in the right. I felt like he ran out of gas for whatever reasons and let it slip out of his hands. He focused too much on his #1 goal which was to take away Calzaghe's number 1 strength, his volume of punches, away from him by cutting his output in half (which he did succeed in doing) but didn't throw any punches himself 2nd half of fight.

Now, with that said, this was a HORRIBLE fight for BOTH fighters. Their styles, plus with both of their false expectations leading up to the fight (they both probably underestimated each other) made both fighters look really bad. Calzaghe fans shouldn't be proud of this win because it was the worst calzaghe has ever looked in his career. And same goes for Hopkins, it was the first time he really looked his age. Neither fighter should really claim this fight. Let it go and move on or have a rematch and settle it.
Great post. And that's a great observation about Hops focusing too much on negating Slappy's main strength. I think it was both a combination of that and his age against a high-volume/high workrate fighter that contributed to such a low punch output.

Personally, I scored it a draw and but no problems with Slappy winning it. His performance was utter garbage but Hopkins didn't do enough for anyone to claim he clearly won the fight.

And yes, one of the worst fights I have ever seen. I watched it twice, so I could come to a definite outcome about the score. I had it the same as I did when I watched it the first time live

You don't win fights just by throwing more punches, or at least, legitimately. Look at the biggest punch landed by Calzaghe, it was a grazing shot that barely moved Hopkins....clean effective punching, Hopkins won the fight.

You score the fight on all factors, not just a choice one.

Calzaghe still landed a decent amount of clean ish shots considering Hopkins was running all night. Whose landed way more cleaner shots on Hopkins, not many and not by much.
