Calzaghe won a close fight. But neither guy did anything special. Both had trouble landing good shots on each other since both guys are awkard and crafy. Bernard was a ghost in the middle rounds and was complaining about low blows.

And I won't watch it again cuz it ******. But that doesn't mean Joe would beat a prime Bernard. A better work rate for B-Hop and who knows what would've happened.

Round 7 you have a good case for Calzaghe, but he still doesn't land much. He has a good beginning to the round, but he misses a lot of punches and Bernard finds home with the Right that round. He also lands some good body shots that help give him the edge. The main reason why Hopkins won that round though was because of the headbutt + right hand counter. Calzaghe was clearly stunned by the right hand at the end there and he missed all those punches he was trying to throw too.

Round 8 has really nothing for Joe except a very good straight left hand at around 1:40 or so. But like 20 seconds after that Bernard lands a very good right hand of his own. Also in that round Bernard lands a nice left hook coming over the top. Bernard's right hand is pretty effective that round. Calzaghe throws a right hook on the break that barely hits Hopkins, but then Hopkins throws a hard right hand that lands flush on Calzaghe. Hopkins clinches at the right times those round, not letting Calzaghe get off flurries. Calzaghe misses a lot that round, while Bernard lands more. I think it's a pretty clear round for Bernard.

Round 7 is close though. It's amazing how slow Bernard looks here compared to Pavlik though.

You still give round 8 to Hopkins? OMG, I guess I'm dealing with blind folkes too. The right hand Hopkins landed after the Calzaghe left was blocked by Calzaghe's shoulder/ hand. That was a Calzaghe round easily. He outworked Hopkins there.

Well said... Not even a Prime Bernard... a "Pavlik" Bernard might have defeated Joe. Bernard said after the Pavlik fight that he had developed his style, which I call "Tae Kwon Boring" to avoid taking unnecessary damage. He said that he felt like he had lost too many close decisions and wasn't going to play it safe anymore....

I'm a big hopkins fan but a realist...the fight was very close, could have gone either way. I infact scored it a draw. I felt Hopkins was winning the fight, but ultimately he is to blame for NOT winning the fight (not the judges/refs/etc) for simply not doing enough late in the right. I felt like he ran out of gas for whatever reasons and let it slip out of his hands. He focused too much on his #1 goal which was to take away Calzaghe's number 1 strength, his volume of punches, away from him by cutting his output in half (which he did succeed in doing) but didn't throw any punches himself 2nd half of fight.

Now, with that said, this was a HORRIBLE fight for BOTH fighters. Their styles, plus with both of their false expectations leading up to the fight (they both probably underestimated each other) made both fighters look really bad. Calzaghe fans shouldn't be proud of this win because it was the worst calzaghe has ever looked in his career. And same goes for Hopkins, it was the first time he really looked his age. Neither fighter should really claim this fight. Let it go and move on or have a rematch and settle it.

I'm talking about the right around 1:35, not the one Calzaghe blocks with his shoulder when they are fighting in the clinch. Calzaghe throws about 3 or 4 punches (misses them btw) and Hopkins lands a right hand counter.

Also Hopkins landed a very good uppercut and hook when on the ropes. Calzaghe threw more punches that round, but he rarely landed any of them except for a nice straight left and a couple others.

Hopkins clearly landed the better punches in that round.

But he didn't land enough when Calzaghe is doing as much work as he did to win the round. Calzaghe left was better than anything Hopkins landed that round + he threw more punches.

If that's the way you see it, fine I guess, but I clearly disagree. Calzaghe's left was probably the best punch of the round, but Hopkins' punches were almost just as good plus he landed more. Calzaghe doing more work shouldn't automatically give him the round when he isn't landing those punches.

In Hockey, does the team who have the most shots on goal or the team who scores the most goals win? I see it somewhat similar here.

I thought JC won a close fight and it wouldn't have surprised me to see it go the other way. It was close. But the essential truth of their relationship is what's in bold above. Shame on JC for not comin' over the pond earlier, which may have prevented this debate from casting an eternal shadow upon his legacy.

Yes, Calzaghe SHOULD have gone to the US earlier, but shame also on Bernard for backing out of that 2002 fight.

It's difficult for me as a fan of both fighters, but if the decision had gone to Hopkins I would have been amazed. That's the truth. Close, but a clear UD for the guy who at least TRIED to make it a fight, despite what anyone thinks of him, he deserved it. Both of them looked like absolute garbage, and that's actually a credit to both for making it that way.
