That was awful (4:15), but that was possibly the worst thing in the whole fight you could have picked out as being "the story of the fight". Does nobody else see the headbutt at the end of the round too? There's a gif of this part floating around, and contrary to what the commentary is saying, Bernard hits JC with a headbutt, it's pretty clear to see. I don't think the fact that he nearly went down (or stumbled, at least) was the effect of a clean right hand so much as it was a combination of the headbutt and being a little off balance, so these things tend to get blown a little out of proportion.

Yes though. That part looks like ****ty fighting from Joe! Total garbage.

@ Kris: Do you have any idea of the state of JC's hands in this fight? Were they smashed or what? I'm just comparing the way he punched in the Jones fight to how he punched here. Did he ever let on that he was injured or anything, cause to me it looks like he's trying hard to protect them.

Hopkins was considered the world's best LHW when he fought Joe.
Thats true, but thats just a credit to how great Bernard Hopkins really is. I am not taking anything away from Joe for going after that fight, Hopkins was the champ, I am just saying that Hopkins was 43 years old.

Hehe, this will probably bring on a wave of criticism at me but yes, I watched an informal interview with him a month or so ago and he mentioned not preparing or performing well for that fight, under estimating Hopkins and that training and sparring hadn't gone as well as it could have, with some small troubles (Bradley Pryce was gona be a key sparring partner and didn't make it out there). Nothing major and he certainly doesn't mention it a lot as doesn't want to be seen to be making excuses. When pushed further he very briefly mentioned some hand troubles, and not being able to spar as much. So it woulda been slightly swollen vulnerable to breaking per some previous fights. That woulda been a big problem and quite possible a loss.

But I think he'd mostly decided he wasn't winning this one on power anyway. Hopkins has a tough chin credit to him, and although Calzaghe woulda wanted to hurt him for his dis respect, he put forwards winning with what he was presented with. And that was scoring where ever he could, from a running dancing, head butting, feinting target.

The idea that Slappy under-estimated Hopkins and wasn't highly motivated is such utter nonsense, it's not even funny.

Let me get this straight. Calzaghe, the guy who fought mandatories for 10 years in Wales, could not get himself motivated for his first fight on American soil, for his biggest pay day and against the biggest name he would ever face?

Just...think about it for a second.

After all that had been said regarding Slappy not fighting in America, he was going to go over there with a lacklustre approach?

And do you know what the funniest thing is? The nutnugger freak jobs actually buy it. And run with it.

All boxers have ****loads of excuse for a below-par performance, and you can usually disregard most of them.

But this one takes the cake. And yet, I now see it popping up in every thread about the Hopkins fight. As if Slappy won DESPITE not being assed.

            Give me ****ing strenght.

I agree, I don't buy that Calzaghe underestimated Hopkins one bit. That is just a bull**** excuse in my view.

Calzaghe never even got tired and was toying with him. Anyone who says Hopkins won is delusional.

Personally I don't think I mentioned motivation, but yes I did Joe saying he under estimated Hopkins. Why is that so hard to take. Not saying he took it easy, but that he came out of that fight thinking that was closer than I anticipated it to be, this 43 year old is better than I expected. Most come away fighting Hopkins and thinking that. Most had serious and legimate excuses they fobbed around like Tarver, Pavlik and Winky. Calzaghe doesn't say half as much and can't just also say he under estimated this 43 year old?

Most people, fans press and Pavlik himself underestimated Hopkins in that fight and should come away the wiser knowing he really is a force, which he keeps on prooving to peoples surprise. I think too much is being made of Joes performance and what he said. There's boxers saying far worse, in fact Pavlik post fight saying he just couldn't get off when he was clearly just outclassed. That was the worst bull **** I'd ever heard and I like the guy. Don't hear so much grief about that, and that's far worse, and but one example.
