Because people can't stand that there is an undefeated top 3 p4p fighter out there who is a British/European boxer. So they then say silly things like Joe Calslappy, he slaps like a 4 year old girl, his only asset is is workrate, etc. in order to cope with their grief.

              Because he's Welsh
              Because he's a southpaw
              Because he's a white man
Because of his unique fighting style
              Because he's not an American
              Because he's a southpaw
Because he's beaten their favorite fighter
              Because he's good a looking guy ??????
Because some fighters such as Ottke ducked him
Because he's only fought once in America
              I beg your pardon Tunney?

You missed the main reason off that poll. Bitterness.

The majority of Europeans give him the respect he deserves, I think you'll find it's mostly Americans who hate him. A couple of years ago it was easy for these people to dismiss Joe as a fighter with a padded record, who was protected by his promoter and not willing to fight outside of the UK. Those were their main reasons for dismissing him as a nobody.

So along comes a guy named Jeff Lacy, and all of a sudden all the Americans are on the band wagon of how Lacy is going to destroy Calzaghe and prove that all the bull**** they've been talking is true. They hype this guy up as if he's the reincarnation of Mike Tyson, due to their biased boxing media he's talked of as being a top 10 p4p fighter and all this other stuff. So then, Calzaghe ****s him and all of a sudden the Americans make an about turn and decide that Lacy was a talentless bum, and Calzaghe didn't prove anything by beating him.

Next up is Mikkel Kessler, who is rightly regarded as the only fighter left at super middleweight who can make a serious challenge to Calzaghe's claim as the main man in that division. So as usual Calzaghe wins, and the Americans realize that with this win they can no longer claim he is protected and he isn't willing to fight the best out there. So the only reason they have left to hate him is that he hasn't fought in America. So Joe goes over to America and beats one of their top fighters, and soon after lines another one up in America.

Going off the original "reasons" why Americans disliked Calzaghe, after the Jones fight they should no longer hate him. Mark my words, this will not be the case. These people are so bitter, rather than giving the man the respect he deserves they'll just look for any kind of reasons they can find to dismiss him. I can guarentee you, after Calzaghe beats Jones, the main arguments people will try to use against Joe is that he didn't fight in America enough and/or he didn't fight enough top fighters in their prime. It is a situation he can't really win either way.

Not all Americans are that way inclined however. Alot of them went from hating him and talking all kinds of trash about him, to claiming to be his number one fans and knowing his whole life story. It's ok, we all know how fickle Americans are, you can't really expect any different from them.

In conclusion, the main reason people hate Joe Calzaghe is bitterness because of the fact he debunked every criticism they tried to throw at him. When they have no reasons left to criticise him they can either admit that they were wrong and he really is that good (most Americans are way too arrogant for that), or they can just carry on hating.

Also they're getting real scared now that they have no new names to suggest Joe's ducking since Kelly 'The Exposed' Pavlik became a real ghost.

Oh well, it's all immaterial anyway. He's gonna retire after beating Jones, a hero to the people of Wales, with most of his brain cells intact.
Who cares what many boxing fans(a lot of whom are American) think?
