See, the thing is, even though I like Pav more, I like B-Hop too. But what I knew would be hard to swallow about the defeat would be the Cal****ty factor. I knew he'd be revisionist **** going on and the Calsploogey fans would use Bernard's win for their own agenda.
If Calducky wasn't in the picture, I woudn't be so disappointed with the loss, because the performance by Hopkins, viewed in context, was wonderful and a bit of a classic.
To be honest though there are a small number of anti-Calzaghe people doing the same thing (yourself included?).

This win SHOULD give Joe some more credit and I'll say that first. But it is and will be blown way out of proportion to what it is.

Merchant said what he said, seemed to know what was up. He would be fun to have a drink with. Pretty cool guy.

They're just in response to the "This means that Slapstick is now an ATG!!!" type threads/posts.
I just find it funny Sploogey's fans riding a Bernard Hopkins win so bad

It's a shame that the Hopkins-Calzaghe fight was not that entertaining or a good performance by either of them (IMO), otherwise I'd be hoping for a rematch. As it is I'd rather see either of them against Chad Dawson.

Sploogey? Come on man, that doesn't work at all.

I thought I'd written Calsploogey enough today to be able to shorten it, like Slappy. I guess not.
Btw, staying on topic, can you go into detail a bit more regarding the fights breaking out in the stands? That's ****ed, man. Was it a Golota V Bowe type atmosphere, with those kind of racial undertones?

I think that Hopkins seemed better conditioned tonight than against especially Calzaghe, and Winky. Even more than Tarver but it's hard to say. Hopkins has never tired in his fights before the Winky fight, or the Calzaghe fight and didn't tire here as much as he did in those two fights. Is that because he was better conditioned? What Joe or Winky did? Against a punching bag in Pavlik? I'll have to watch the tape of this fight before I can reasonably answer that.
I noticed that if he had been younger he could have put Pavlik away from the 8 or 9th onward but didn't think he would. He would hurt Pavlik and back off from getting tired from throwing.
Pavlik was completely brought into Hopkins game plan so it must be pretty easy to preserve energy when the fight is completely your way.
As for how much he has left? I don't know. I noticed the Pavlik glaring weaknesses from ringside so I'm sure Hopkins did too hence making it an easy fight. Again I'll have to watch the fight on tape next week. I just got back and this is all from memory.
Against Pavlik he was fighting a guy who he had discouraged to the point where Pavlik wasn't throwing half his normal number of punches. I think it's the fighters rather than Hopkins conditioning, he never looked spent in the Pavlik fight despite throwing 100 more punches than in the Calzaghe fight but I think that's because Calzaghe made Hopkins use his legs more. Hopkins only has a problem when he's FORCED to do something he doesn't want to which tires him out.

They should stick to their bull**** UFC trash where it's okay to quit and have 20 losses and still be an ATG.
Pav. deserves credit and better fans. He seems like a great guy.
But anyway...
Yeah. I saw the fight over at a friend's house, and while I would have preferred Pavlik to win, I've always liked B-Hop so it was kinda' of a torn feeling I had with two fighters I genuinely like. I was very impressed with B-Hop and the way he handled Pavlik, even almost knocking him out at certain times. So, it was great.
My notes:
- I haven't seen many people commentating about it. But one of the more memorable moments watching the fight was when Hopkins stared at the media after the fight, his mouth was quivering as if he was about to cry. I remember thinking: "Wow, he must be on cloud nine after what he's just pulled off!"
-After the fight, before the scorecards, my brother's friends were badmouthing Hopkins, and I jokingly said: "Don't worry, Pavlik's gonna' win
the fight. They're gonna' give him the decision..." To which one of them responded: "Hopkins would gouge his eyes out to prove the point that he was robbed blind."
- Doesn't Kelly seem rubbery whenever he starts getting clipped by haymakers?
- Again, I wanted Pavlik to win, but you can't help but be impressed with what Hopkins was doing...
- As I read in another post: "Pavlik didn't show that 'bag of tricks' he talked about."
- I've never really paid attention to Pavlik's corner advice, but in this one (I swear) during the fight I kept wondering: "Has Lowe said anything different?"
Double the jab, then the right...he must've said this at LEAST 4 or 5 times in between rounds, though I don't have the fight to re-watch it.
- During the after-fight scuffle, I was embarrassed for Pavlik. Here he is, knowing he's lost the fight, and on top of that his team is about to get into a fight with the Hopkins' camp...I honestly thought that made them look "white trash", not Pavlik, just the team...though I'm not sure if it was the whole team. I know for a fact that the short-statured member was really pissed off, though.
- I caught one of the lines that Hopkins was saying to Pavlik (not precise): "You're a terrific champion, and keep ruling that middleweight division like I used to, a'ight?"A-ight?
- YET ANOTHER undefeated fighter loses his 0.
To give you a curious metaphor: boxing is a living room, the top undefeated fighters are in the VIP section where dope is being made...and Floyd left right before the FBI (Quintana, Margarito and Hopkins) moved in for the drug bust. Cotto got severely wounded and was hospitalized by Lieutenant Margarito, Pavlik was too stoned to struggle against Officer Hopkins, and Williams was arrested by Rookie Quintana who was subsequently blown up in his house as soon as Williams made parole.
