Not at welterweight they didn't. Hearns was 32-1 with 30 KO's at welterweight with the one loss to Leonard. Only two fighters during that period went the distance with Hearns and one was a middleweight named Mike Colbert. Although Colbert went the distance, Hearns knocked him down 4 times and broke his jaw. Colbert was decent middleweight too. I pick Hearns over Trinidad because Hearns was a better all around fighter. Better boxing skills.Trinidad can't fight well going backwards and he would have to against Heanrs or it would be a short night. I can't see Trinidad going forward eating right hand bombs from Hearns and surviving it. Hearns hit that hard at welterweight and his left hook to the body was no joke either.

    exactly

lol at pr's saying trinidad wins

Great post and you are correct I may have made a mistake by reading to much into Tommy's peformances at MW and above considering this is a WW bout. Hearns did not face any WW with anywhere near the power that Trinidad had at that weight though and I think that would have had an impact on Tommy's aggressiveness. I still think it is a very close fight that could have gone either way however I agree that Tommy was by far the superior boxer of the two.

Tito gets put on the canvas early...to only then get put on the canvas again for good in the middle rounds. Hearns KO around 5.

Though there should be a poll option that says "Whoever lands the first big shot"

Hearns knocks him out in the middle portion of the fight. No disrespect to Felix because he was a great Welterweight champion, but Tommy was a freak. His boxing ability was on a different level and his right hand down the pipe was legendary.

His advantages in height, length and handspeed would see him land first...that'd be bad for Tito.

Hearns outboxes Trinidad before knocking him out but if Trinidad catches him, it's good night for Hearns.

Good post! I agree 100%. Nice to see Hearns left to the body get mention. Everybody talks about his right, but that left was lethal as well.

tito was arguably the hardest punchers ever at 147.

hearns did not have the best of chins.

i see tito catching hearns and knocking hearns out.

i think everybody is caught up in romanticizing hearns skills.

hearns has the advantage over tito in height , reach and boxing skills.

if hearns used his length and boxed i can see him beating tito much like hopkins did BUT hearns sometimes doesn't use his height and reach and for someone with great boxing skills he gets drawn into slugfests and didn't box.

remember guys , leonard didn't box to beat hearns the first time around......he slugged with hearns. when ray was boxing hearns was winning the rounds , when ray slugged it out is when he got the ko.

                  tito beats hearns by ko.

I agree I think it is much closer than ppl are making out. With a guy like Tommy it is so easy to get carried away with how good he looked in the ring and not acknowledge that there were certain styles out there that were pretty poor match ups for him.

The Tito left hook is what I would be most worried about. Hearns had a tendency of getting caught by left hooks and as you say he didn't have the best of chins. Could he really have outboxed arguably the most powerful WW in the history of the sport for a full 12 rounds without getting caught by a Tito left hook, the punch he was historically most vulnerable to? I'm not as sure as most seem to be.

It is also important to remember that Trinidad was a deadly finisher and if he hurt Hearns badly it would most likely be all over for Tommy.

If the Hitman boxes UD12 or late round TKO for Hearns.

If the Hitman gets drawn into a slugging with Felix , Felix had a good chin and one of the hardest punchers ever at Welterweight and Light Middleweight , Tito could get a KO of Hearns.
