Is Margarito the most overrated boxer in history?

Because heart can overcome actual skill at times..
and this fight proved that statement..what would actually make Margarito an elite in the Boxing world?..his High work rate?..maybe..his iron chin?..ok?..or is it his tremendous speed...great footwork..stunning power..superior defense..or any other well-defined skill that would make him stand out?..
Bottom-line is..Him, his friends and family..and his down right #1 fans/stans can only credit him for 100+ punches per round..and his iron chin..
Again I'm not taking anything away from the man....he is a machine..but he's been exposed before..he can be exposed again..
Using your logic Tito Trinidad was never elite because he relied on his power, and once he got to fighting bigger fighters he could no longer beat them because those traits were no longer enough. In my opinion he still used those traits to beat top fighters and has to be considered elite even if it only took him so far.Comment

I understand what you're saying. But I think you'd be wrong to say he isn't elite. He will only lose against other elite fighters, which is not considered being exposed by most rational fans. There is a difference between relying on will and chin to win fights and not being elite. It doesn't matter which one of your attributes you use to beat the elite, you become elite when you can beat other top fighters.

and I understand what ur stating..
But at the same time..What Margarito excels in..it's not based off skill or a practiced trade..It's god given abilities..it's what he was born with..
With that said..well he's naturally slow..but if he would have an above average defense..and above average foot work..he wouldn't be a questioned "elite" fighter..and this thread wouldn't have been made now..but maybe 5 yrs ago when he woulda been proving he should be listed amongst the best..Comment

What a ****** ass thread.
No real accomplishments? You mean, apart from knocking the undefeated P4P elite Cotto? Clottey now has an ABC belt, and he holds a win over him. Margarito is a 3 time champ at 147...
He also held onto the WBO belt for a very long time.
Finally the fact that he lost the decision, but didn't really look like he lost the fight against Williams shows that he wasn't dominated by any means.
Do you honestly think that Margarito is more overrated than a Mark Breland? Come on haterfree, try to represent your name with some accuracy.
Read my post before you reply. I said no real amateur accomplishments. Who the **** is Mark Breland? Fact is Paul Williams won the fight by UD. It doesn't matter if he dominated him or not.Comment

Paul Williams wasn't/isn't an elite fighter when he beat Margs..

And Margarito's workrate is not God given, just as Tito's accuracy wasn't either. Some parts of their game requires hard work and dedication but all fighters rely on certain trairts heavily, Tony isn't the only one. If Tony doesn't prepare the way he does, conditioning wise, his game falls big time, nothing god given about that.Comment

And if you are so hot on amatuer trivia, then you are either joking about not knowing how Breland is, or... you don't know anything about amatuer boxing. Breland is widely considered one of the best amatuers ever. 110-1 as an amatuer with a gold medal. Then he turned professional and didn't really live up to his potential. He was supposed to be the 2nd coming of JC when he turned pro though, seriously.
The phrase "beaten but not vanquished" comes to mind in both of the recent Margarito losses. The same way that Hopkins lost to Joey Cal and Taylor, neither of them were really vanquished in any of their recent losses, which is why they are still very highly regarded.Comment

Tito had god given punching power, because you sure as hell can't tell me he had amazing footwork or speed. For reference see the fight against Winky Wright to see just how limited he was as a boxer when someone found a way to nuetralize his power. No knock on Tito I do think he was elite but I think he relied on his power, it's no different that relying on your chin.

and ok..work-rate is something Margarito can be held high for perfecting in a boxing aspect..but what else?..
his heart and chin come from genetics and swag..
but that wins him fights..I'm not takin that away from him..but it will only get him so far hence he's only been a monster at 147lb when he looks more of a natural 154lber..
He will be held high now and is hyped cuz of his recent accomplishment..but if he isn't consistent with beating the best there is and the ones targeting him now..he will be back to bein nothin more than a B-level fighter as always..Comment

I can respect that..But I have to disagree that power is a god givin ability..there is naturally strong people..but not that ****in strong..That was built with training...

I can respect what you think, but I think he'll win some more fights in the near future to convince some more people.Comment

as my english teacher always said.."Gettin an A is easy..maintainin an A is what counts."
And I respect him as a hard-workin fighter and using his limited abilities to dominate..and I can def see him winning more fights..but hopefully he'll win the ones that matter the most..(e.g. WilliamsII, ClotteyII, CottoII)
2 out of the 3 he beat already..but can and will he again?..that's how he needs to prove he's not just some flukey ass non-stop puncher..Comment
