Exactly... Let me add to that fact that we have more to go on with Whitaker. We know how he performed against the elite in his era and division. We were not left asking how he would have done against a prim,e DLH or a prime Chavez.

On the other hand, we really dont know how good Mayweather is because he has not fought the elites of his era and division. We didnt see him against his peers such as Cotto, Margarito, Tszyu, Mosley or Williams.

Does anybody here actually think that Sweat Pea wouldnt have fought any of the top 5 at WW in two years. Sweat Pea ducked no one and was happy to fight his contemporaries, just to make them look ****** while outboxing them... Sweat Pea was a real champ and warrior...

i got pea but not because of all this ducking bull**** just because of his skill. May has flaws but no-one has capitilised he may be the closest thing to unbeatable we have seen... Just too smart, quick and accurate for anyone in the game

Whitaker has a superior resume, but skill wise? That's really hard to call. I think Whitaker might edge it just due to the fact he's a southpaw.

i can tell quite a few people in this thread have never seen whitaker fight. i personally think mayweather is better because he posessed the edge in power. speed/defense/movement/intelligence, both of them have it all, but whitaker has the better resume, but he also had alot more great fighters in his prime weightclass to be matched up against then mayweather. however if mayweather stepped it up at welterweight for just 1 or 2 more years, he would surpass him.

mayweather i think is better, but whitaker has the better resume. but whitaker was my dude for years, it hurts for me to say anyone might be better than him because he was so special to watch.

Whitaker's reflexes were nowhere near as good as Mayweather's, he was knocked down in practically every other fight. Whitaker is also about two inches shorter than Mayweather. Mayweather is faster. I'd say Mayweather has Whitaker beat in practically every category.

Whitaker clearly fought the tougher opponents even at the end of his career. He has never ducked anyone and has taken bigger risks than Mayweather. Skillwise would have to be a toss up. It really depends on what you like in a fighter. An amazingly talented fighter with flashy handpeed and brilliant boxing skills? Or a text book slick southpaw that displayed pure boxing brilliance and could out box almost anyone? I personally would prefer Whitaker.

I noticed that a few people are saying that Mayweather has every advantage over Whitaker, which is certainly wrong. Whitaker has better inside game, has better footspeed, is the better out boxer ,is the faster starter and has slightly better adaptability than Mayweather. One advantage for Mayweather that i do like is his advantage in power which makes him more exciting to watch. You can never go wrong with a knockout but i personally enjoy seeing technical matches just as much.

One thing that I realized didn't REALLY get mentioned was that they DID have a common opponent.

De La Hoya. WIth that being said, how do you think that changes this argument?
