  • ..Who's Better: MAYWEATHER Or WHITAKER?...

'The biggest downer is that the sport is losing its most skilled practitioner. Mayweather was the best prizefighter around. Period. He wasn’t nearly as great as he thinks he was—in the pantheon of classical boxers you don’t have to go back any farther than Pernell Whitaker to find someone better—but he was the best of his era.'

    -William Dettloff.

First of all, what do you think of the comment, in general and his overall opinion of Mayweathers career? And what do you think of him saying that Whitaker is better than Mayweather?

This argument may have come up, but I don't care.

Boxing wise, Mayweather, he was more complete IMO.

whitaker is not the greatest fighter of his generation, so no he is not better then floyd. floyd was quicker, stronger and smarter. there was nothing pernell did that floyd couldn't neutralize.

You don't have to be the greatest of your generation to beat the greatest of a different generation.

For example, in terms of the heavyweights, Wladamir is the greatest of THIS heavyweight generation, so far. Yet, I'd take Frazier over Wlad, and I don't think Frazier was the best of his generation.

Pernell had head movement that Floyd has NEVER seen. EVER. And underrated power. Fast hands, AMAZING footwork. Could shoulder roll on the ropes and could take a decent punch.

To act as if Mayweather just mows Sweet Pea over, is insane.

If you catch him on the chin (which is hard, but possible) he CAN be wobbled and he has brittle hands when he throws enough punches. He could also be considered a slow starter if you take his last fights into consideration. He started slow against Hatton, De La Hoya and Judah. Not to say it wasn't by choice, but it's a weakness.

Some fighters have been able to do some of the things he has done and they did it from the 1st round on.

I would say Whitaker. Only just though. They are both complete class.

I side with this also. I think that if they fought, and I love both fighters styles to death, Floyd would come out on top. But with that said, this would be one hell of a fight. In case you guys forgot how good pea was, sweetpea fought a prime tito and even though he had his jaw broke which nobody knew until he told us, he fought bravely which was pernell whitaker. Floyd showed early in his career that if you pressure him, he would beat your arse. And he did it with skill. Both of these guys are 2 of the beest defensive fighters who ever lived. One used the shoulder, the other made you miss by inches.

Starting slow isn't a weakness. It is a mistake.
