He didn't beat anybody specific to become # 1. Just that he has been a consistant Top 10 P4P fighter for the majority of his career.

He defeated Corrales who was a Top 10 P4P fighter and moved up in the list. His status only got stronger as he kept moving up in weight. There were two guys he couldn't have surpassed no matter who he beat......Hopkins and Jones.

Those two haven't lost in over 10 years but when they did he took over as THE NEXT BEST GUY. Winning a title at 154 and beating a unbeaten Top 10 P4P fighter in Hatton only confirms that he is the best P4P fighter in the world.

Juan Lazcano roughed Hatton up and nearly KO'd him were it not for the ref.. .. some P4P fighter!
Just goes to show that the P4P title doesn't mean much anyway dos it?
If Cotto wins against Marg he will be the better welterweight.. and really, that's all I care about.

margarito has more hype going into the Cotto fight than the Williams fight. Nobody was saying Margarito/Williams was FOTY material before the fight even tho both guys are known to throw a lot of leather for 12 rounds.

As far as stock goes, the Margarito pre-Williams would of been a higher degree fight than the Margarito post-Williams. Margarito had won over Clottey and Cintron as you mentioned and he was still the WBO champ. However I think the post-Williams Margarito is a more dangerous, hungrier fighter because he knows he is not getting any younger and has the opportunity to establish his name as the true force that he is at Welterweight.
