The simple answer to the question asked in the subject of the topic is because they picked Hopkins to win.
Why are people downgrading Calzaghes win over Bernard Hopkins so much?

i just wish people were consistent. i know that sounds crazy coming from me but i have no problem saying floyd is the best i've ever seen live (not live as in in person but in real time, during my era) regardless of some things i dont agree with.
if we were to look at the Calz vs. Hop polls, im sure we can find that some of the posters who voted for Hop to win and are the same posters not givin Joe his due credit. Sooo if Hop was old, washed up and senile now, why the **** would you vote for a fighter who can be found early sunday mornings at Luby's using his senior citizen discount to beat another world class p4p ranked fighter?
because you believed your own hype and now you look like a fool.Comment

lol...except that I didn't say he had to be entertaining for him to get credit. I said he had to be impressive for people not to criticize him. 2501 is not capable of understanding that I was giving Calzaghe credit.
I guess it was somewhat equivocal when I said "anyone worth their weight in legitimacy will give Calzaghe credit for winning his supremacy in the ring." I was referring to the Hopkins fight and I guess someone who reads that might think that I thought Calzaghe is "**** and a boring fighter."
When I followed that up with something about how "when you're sitting near the top of the P4P charts people will criticize your every move" I guess I went over the line and became hypocritical.Comment

Because those same people actually thought (and rightfully so) that even a senior citizen Hopkins with crutches would give Calzaghe hell.
And he did.
Arguably won as well.Comment

Did anyone think Calzaghe could knock Hopkins out heading into the fight? Did anyone think Calzaghe could have won a lopsided unanimous decision heading into the fight? I think many, if not most, people thought either was altogether possible.
Since Calzaghe won a split decision and got his face busted up in a fight that COULD HAVE launched him to P4P supremacy he's GOING TO FACE CRITICISM. Get over it. It happens. When fans are criticizing your every move you must be doing something right. He won and he'll have a chance to be more impressive next time. He's still in most people's top 3 P4P. He'll be alright. Criticism might sting a little bit, but Calzaghe will get over it.Last edited by javelin_fangs; 05-26-2008, 04:16 PM.Comment

hopkins is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to the age thing..
and did he not hire the "proverbial boxing A team" to crush joe who came across the pond with his little dad and a backpack to take on the hopkins entourage and hype machine in full flow
and he DID win,to say he didnt is delusional foreman and ledderman had it right
and we all know no one looks good against the former con,its one bad performance in a near perfect career but in the end he got the job done,im sure he will more than make up for it in his next one.Comment

Well see that's the thing. Just because someone says that Hopkins gave Calzaghe hell doesn't mean they necessarily can't be giving Calzaghe the credit that he deserves. It seems to me like 2501 doesn't want to hear that. He wants people to "be consistent." Anything that he thinks is inconsistent must be hypocritical.
Hopkins did give Calzaghe hell. I mean what are we supposed to lie and say Calzaghe dominated? For long stretches there it didn't look like Calzaghe was going to win the fight, but he outworked the older man down the stretch. Are we supposed to lie about it in order to appease 2501's sensitive sensibilities? LOLComment
