Why are people downgrading Calzaghes win over Bernard Hopkins so much?

If you're referring to me I think it might be more accurate to say that in order for me to think of Calzaghe as a special fighter of immense talent he'd need to do something no other fighter had done. And I think that's a very reasonable criteria for making that claim.
Calzaghe has had my respect as a top fighter. I just don't think he's legendary. Had he dominated Hopkins in a way that no one has ever done before I might have changed my tune. Instead, he won a close fight and I still stand by my assertion that he's very good, but not one of the all-time greats P4P.
Please keep in mind, that that is merely my opinion. You're not going to get a vociferous argument from me if you think he is.Comment

What were you guys saying when Hatton was KO'D by Mayweather? Same ****, there's always an excuse. For the record I knew Hopkins was too old to beat Calz, which is a pretty good fighter. I was surprised to see so many fans here thought Hopkins was going to win. Don't lump all Americans into one plan of thought. I'm aware not all Brits were convinced Hatton would beat Floyd. Smarten up or continue looking ****** to those of us who know what's happening.

Good points! He's a damn good fighter, but way overrated by his fans.If you're referring to me I think it might be more accurate to say that in order for me to think of Calzaghe as a special fighter of immense talent he'd need to do something no other fighter had done. Au contraire. I could give a **** if Calzaghe is a 'legend' or any of that nonsense. I never even thought about if before I came to this forum and had my mind polluted. Calzaghe is two weight Ring Champion and a top P4P guy right now and thats all that matters really. Everything else is just hype and bickering. If you're referring to me I think it might be more accurate to say that in order for me to think of Calzaghe as a special fighter of immense talent he'd need to do something no other fighter had done. So you won't get a vociferous argument from me either. Peace.

To be honest, it's hard to rationalize The Ring's rankings sometimes. Ever since they were bought by Golden Boy they've lost a lot of the legitimacy that they carried.
Don't get me wrong, I don't know what Calzaghe is ranked by Ring and I'd be fine with anything from #2 on down, BUT I don't swear by Ring's rankings the way I used to. Sometimes I agree with them and other times I scratch my head.
For example, I read somewhere that Hopkins is still #5. I guess that makes sense in that Calzaghe is probably #2 or 3 and since the fight was so close Hopkins should be ranked very high. BUT it's curious that Hopkins is a Golden Boy partner, clearly past his prime and is still ranked #5 at a time when younger fighters (like Miguel Cotto and Kelly Pavlik) are starting to really step up and really make a push for those types of P4P rankings.Comment
