Here's what Joe Louis said about Ali in 1967:

“The kid has speed and there’s no one around to outbox him, and the opponent who tries is in his grave, especially in the middle if the ring. I’d see to it that Clay didn’t stay in ring center. No. He’d be hit into those ropes as near a corner as I could get him. If he stayed on the ropes he would get hurt. Sooner or later he’d try to bounce off, when he did he would get hurt more. I’d press him, cut down his speed, and **** him around the ribs. I’d punish the body. “Kill the body and the head will die”, Chappie use to tell me. It figures. Sooner or later he’d forget about that face of his and he would start dropping that left hand like he did against Mildenberger and Chuvalo. Those fellows got their openings by accident, and fouled it up. I would work for it and wouldn’t reckon to miss when it arrived. Cassius Clay is a nice boy and a smart fighter. But I am sure Joe Louis would have licked him.”

I honestly can't see Louis beating Ali, Ali would be too fast for him, Ali also had very good timing. Look at what Billy Conn did to a prime Louis before getting ****y.

You need a school to show you how to turn caps lock off...

Louis was a great fighter, so fast and powerful....

but while in his prime was knocked out by Max Schmeling ( A loss which he did more than avenge) and got decisions against Arturo Godoy and Joe Wolcott which people found to be.....strange, although he knocked them out in rematches. Howeverm he did resort to his bum of the month club where fighters got a shot for acheivements such as 'Being knocked out 7 times in a row', and these made up a bulk of his defenses and he also kept his title while he was in the army for 3 years (i believe) where he barly defended it.mJoe was pretty much always favourite to win.

Ali was the underdog against Liston twice, fougth the GOVERNMENT, was expected to be killed by Foreman and had a 3 year layoff in what would have been his prime in which he was told by a doctor he would never be able to box well again only to become HW champ again..twice.

Bottom line, Louis had trouble with movement, go and watch the Billy Conn fight (first one) where he was outboxed, but won by a late KO. Ali coudl outbox Louis, and his ectodantry chin could take the power..i believe.

Although Louis is my Faveourite HW of all time, Ali is the greatest.. but you could argue either mans case to be the best really. The thing i loved about Louis was the way he could literally hit someone in such a way (to the body) that they just could no longer move, he just had that kinda power, and the speed whoa that was great. His Jab was brilliant as well, but i think it wasnt as good as Alis, cause Joes jab could be timed, like Max did, Alis was just like BAM he hit you, BAM again damn it BAM he gotcha again.

Both could be called one, maybe a tied number 1?

When Ali fought Foreman Norton Frazier etc , he was not in his prime are you aware of that , his speed was not near what it was earlier ,,,, you can run but you cant hide lol , Ali stood in front of Foreman and let him punch him like he was a punch bag and you think Louis is gunna hurt him even if he could catch him , Foreman is a huge puncher ,, look at what Ali done to one of the greatest light heavys in history in Bob Foster , then look at Billy Conn and Ezzard Charles with Louis ,,, prime Ali at 6'3 and a 4'' reach advantage had to much speed and to good of a chin for Louis , he would beat him up and drop him off inside 10 rounds .
