Ali beat many more better fighters, has more legends on his record(I mean Frazier, Foreman, Liston, Norton etc. It doesn't get any better than that) has overcome the odds more often, more accomplishments, was more versatile as a fighter therefor would fare better against any Boxer in history etc. I think most people who think Louis was greater are either basing it on their dislike of Ali and/or Louis' reign as a champion.

Your dreaming mate , the class of opposition between Ali and Louis was quite a lot , its easy to cut the ring against duds , , Joe Louis couldnt pin Charles or handle his speed but Marciano and Walcot both KOed Charles , Ezzard had nothing on Ali ,,,,,, Joe was a good hard punching fighter that would have had nightmares with Ali ,,, Alis chin would handle Joes power but Joe could not handle Alis speed .
