Yeah.. Strange you would mention this fight.

Hopkins shows his incredible defensive skills here. It's a showcase.

By the second round Echols is getting paid for every miss, and badly.

Hopkins is virtually untouchable unless Echols body checks, grabs, or turns Hopkins with his superior strength and punching power..

Alot of this action is reminscent of the Trinidad fight.

Mayweather has the best defense, but not for the reason you imagine. He stays out of the ring when he sees a potential threat.....

Sadly, we're still on this ****ing bull****, nonsense, crap that Floyd Mayweather has a better defense than Hopkins.

        What a ****ing joke.. :wank:
What makes that a big joke?

They both have great defense...neither are rarely hit clean...one is more subtle in defense, one is more flashy...

it is either or...Hopkins down twice in his career to one man...never really hurt again with an exception for a shot on the back of the head by Taylor as he bent down...Floyd hurt once to Chop Chop be a perfect counter...

other than that, both have been hit cleanly but barely...and not really shaken up...

it is by no means a stretch to say Floyd OR Hopkins has a better defense...

I would put both of them over Winky as Winky DOES get hit and mostly does one thing defensively as he comes forward...

Hopkins, Toney and Mayweather all have varied defense...Winky holds his gloves up to his face...hey, it works...Floyd evades, slips, counters and uses his shoulders, arms and elbows to defend to the body...hits and ducks well...left shoulder to slip right hands...right glove to catch left hooks...right elbow to catch left hooks to the body, holds his gloves up to his face like Winky...etc...etc...there is A LOT more that Floyd does than people think...

Toney slips punches with his shoulder and counters, though he does get hit to the body...he moves his head and turns his body away from punches...

Hopkins moves well, slips with his shoulder, doesn't get hit in the body, counters well, moves back well, turns his body well, moves his head, can punch and duck out of the way quickly like Floyd

good post! all the fighters mentioned have great defenses which they have perfected over the years to suit their own styles. if i had to pick one guy who's defense i would most want to have, i would have to go with mayweather. he can stand anywhere in the ring, and block, parry, slip, weaver, roll, all the punches.

Floyd shows good all around defense.

Toney had no legs and Winky has no head movement.

Floyd can fight moving his feet, he can move his head, he can roll punches, and block them with his gloves.

Defensively, there's nothing Floyd has yet to demonstrate in a fight.

I voted for Toney every time I saw him fight he always looked great defensively. His movement and the way he slipped punches even up until now is impressive to watch.

Toney at least HAD the best defense in boxing. He was an out of shape can and he was still able to switch from defense to offense better then anyone in boxing. Best inside fighter in the sport and one of the most skilled fighters of the past 15 years. Easily.

Floyd is the best because he is not just extremely skilled and talented but his conditioning is unmatched. However his offense is nowhere near Hopkins or Toney. Both of these guys actively tried to knock the other guy out and punish them. Floyd does neither.

I picked it exactly because it is a master's peformance by prime Hopkins, (and hence I was watching last night it after an argument in another thread with someone complaining Hopkins does not come to fight)

Great performance, landing those right hands flush on Echols chin, roughing him up on the inside, outboxing him from the outside, playing possum on the ropes. I would not have wanted to be Echols.

Still Hopkins gets hit from round 1 to round 12, and "Mayweather gets hit more in 4 fights than Hopkins in his entire career" is a false statement.

Thing people forget is that they all get hit in their own ways...in fact Hopkins probably gets hit the LEAST of all of them...

Toney and Mayweather do more standing in the pocket or on the ropes. So they will get hit to the body, but mentally (Toney, Mayweather) and physically (Mayweather) they are prepared to take it.

Hopkins doesn't stay in the pocket as much as they do, so he takes less to the body. Floyd will get hit from time to time by a speedy punch, but not by big power punches flush.

Floyd sometimes spends a lot of time waiting to counter, so vs a speedy opponent he may get hit while waiting and he moves straight back a lot.

Toney doesn't have good moving legs, so he will get hit to the body and he trades more inside. So his inside trading can get him touched up a bit more.

Winky comes forward with his gloves up and he invites punches in, so vs an active (Quartey, Soliman) or bigger fighter (Taylor) he will get touched up.

Hopkins is probably the smoothest of all of them. He doesn't move as much as Floyd, however he uses more offense. He moves more than Toney, so his body is untouched. He moves his head and torso more than Winky, so his face is untouched. He uses his size more than Floyd, so his opponents are a little more intimidated.

The perception and numbers in this poll are reflective of this "joke" I refer to.. That's the point I'm making. Note how I refer to other polls on this subject in the post this is in response to.

I see you're on the right page overall. Compliments.
