Dont know about fame comparing either sports in the US but I do know that there has been 250,000 Beckham shirt sales in the US.
What does that say about his popularity?

Because if you seen in the time when Ali was boxing it was all war and stuff and Ali did someone heroic by not going to war because of the black people so in other words people was drawen into boxing because of that and lived for quit will til the 90s or so.
most people would know Joe Frazier or Foreman or Sonny Liston who was where Ali started his boxing fame is by beating Liston
