I was not smoking crack in 2006.
Thunder, where did I attack you? I disputed what you SAID.
You claimed that you saw PBF , Arum and Margarito on TV talking about the fight was a done deal.
You never saw that. It did not happen. Floyd did not want the Margarito fight. Floyd wanted the Delahoya fight.
Here is EXACTLY what happened:
In the fall of '05, after the dusting of Sharmba, Floyd was negotiating for a Judah fight. People were excited about that fight. Judah had blown out Cory in a rematch and his career was back on track. The date was set for April 8th 2006. Judah had a mandatory vs Balthazar, Baldomir, something like that. No problem, right? Random tomato can from Argentina?
Then came the seventh round.
Judah loses a close decision, and Floyd-Zab is in jeopardy. That week, Ellerbe and Haymon scramble to find another fight. They call Ray Hatton, and he says that Ricky would need 'tune ups'. Huh? WTF?! He just beat Tszyu and Maussa!! What kind of young, active champion needs "tune ups"? Oh well. Whatever. They begrudgingly call Arum, but Margarito had a late February piece-of-**** PPV scheduled at the Aladdin Hotel in Vegas with ******* Gomez.
Nobody wanted Mayweather-Baldomir, so Team Mayweather moves ahead with Zab anyway. Floyd wins, although his nuts are sore.
Throughout this time, the boards (including THIS one) are abuzz that Floyd is a ducker, and that he "turned down" an $8 million "offer" from Margarito. In truth, Arum was playing a game and offering Floyd money from Floyd's own pockets. Margarito has no fan base, as evidenced by his 30K PPV buys vs. Gomez and the half-sold room at the Aladdin.
Floyd goes to the Delahoya-Mayorga fight the next month hoping that his potential cash cow doesn't get beaten. Thankfully, Oscar looks good and the Oscar-Floyd talk gets started.
Oscar said that he would announce his "Floyd Decision" during the weekend of Hopkins-Tarver in Atlantic City. He was saying that he would either fight Floyd on September 16th, or retire. That was also the weekend of Cotto-Malignaggi. The Hop-*****Lips fight did solid nums, while Cotto's PPV tanked.
Oscar said that he would not fight again that year. His shoulder hurts. So PBF shifted his sights to Mosley. After Mosley knocks Fe-ROID-o Vargas out with that sweet left hook, Merchant asks SSM if he will take the Mayweather fight. Shane says - and I'm not even joking - that he has to take Jin on vacation, and he has to get his tooth checked out. True Story.
Floyd appears ****ed. Gatti is supposed to beat Baldomir, and it's clear that PBF can't go fight Gatti again. Their first meeting wasn't a fight. It was a snuff tape.
WHOA. Baldomir KO's Gatti. SAVED!! So now, PBF has an opponent for the fall. Floyd shows up in pink, hits Baldomir for six rounds, hurts his hands, and dances for the other six. Crowd is restless and boos ring around the arena. Who couldn't see this happening? Cobwebs grow on Baldomir's fists mid-punch. He is Valuev-slow. Will Perdue laughs at Tata's speed.
After the Floyd/Baldo fight, Showtime puts on a dual card with Margie and Cotto. Miguel looks very good. Scary, even. Margie looks ordinary. But Clottey makes most people look bad. This was s'posed to be a showcase to set up a Miguel-Antonio bout. But they forgot about Paul Williams, and his legitimate claim as a mandatory.
During this time period, GBP and Team Mayweather are negotiating. After the new year, the fight is announced and the rest is history.
Sorry for the long recounting of last year's history, but I needed to prove to you that there was NEVER a PBF-AM fight "made". Floyd never "pulled out", because the fight was never done. They didn't even meet with Arum.
Sorry.
Anybody remember things differently?
