"They expressed very definate disapproval of the verdict, but later cheered the home boy who had upset the fighter who has been characterized as the best in the world, pound for pound."

Exact quote taken from an AP report written in June of 1933, which describes a fight between Tony Canzoneri and Barney Ross.

Nevermind Whitaker himself...In 1933, I'd be willing to bet that even Whitaker's father was still not even a twitch in his grandpa's loins.

That's also the earliest direct & dated quote that I can find the exact "pound for pound" term being used, but some contemporary writings from historians give credit to the term first being used to describe Benny Leonard.

No problem on the info, and if I'm not mistaken, I believe some have posted a video or two of Pep over the last couple/few days...

A search should bring what you're looking for, but if not, check out youtube.

Pernell was my boy. Quit with the anti-Pernell nostalgia...it's making me sad.

Bad comparison. Floyd is not liked because he is ****y and truly believes he is the best ever. He has extremely high confidence in himself.

The majority of fighters who step through the ropes at any sort of level have to believe in themselves if they want to achieve sucess.

Mayweathers talent is undoubted, however he comes across as a complete tit. His arrogance knows no bounds and he handles himself with a lack of dignity.

Its ok to be brash and bold and full of yourself if you have the personality and intelligence to pull it of re: Ali. Floyd simply doesn't and therefore comes across as more of an irritant.

Personally I took issue with his attitude after the Castillo fight, which he was gifted IMO and I hope in the opinion of any true boxing fan. He just jabbered on and on about how he would not make any excuses and imeadiatly began complaining about his hand, his arm and his rotator cuff etc. It just smacked of a petulant child. He should have given Castillo a little more respect. On the other hand you then have Castillo who having been robbed just dealt with it with good grace. It would be interesting to know what the Mayweather fans thought about this?

I actually believe Floyd is at this moment the finest fighter out there but he doesn't do himself any favours in the eyes of many boxing fans.

He says he changed his attitude somewhat. He said he used to just fight for the money but now he fights for his legacy. That other side of him is still in him though.
