Round 2: Lewis tries to land some punches, but foreman blocks them and lands a vicious right hand that drops lewis. lewis cannot move as he is counted out. the fight is over!

buffer: "The winner at 0:31 seconds of the second round by a knockout, George Fooreman!"(loud boos can be heard and also some dropped jaws can be seen)

Welcome to Convention Hall in Philadelphia, PA for fight #3 between liston and holmes. the series is tied up at 1-1. who will take the 2-1 lead? here's the tale of the tape.

        Sonny Liston

        age: 28
        height: 6'-1"
        weight: 213
        reach: 84"
        record: 28-1-0 (18ko)

        Larry Holmes

        age: 30
        height: 6'-3"
        weight: 211
        reach: 80"
        record: 36-0-0 (27ko)

now larry holmes is in the ring and a few cheers could be heard. and now charles sonny liston is in the ring and the crowd erupts with applause! they both are poised and ready. here is michael buffer.

Michael Buffer: "Ladies and gentlemen, llllllets get ready to ruumblllllllllee! in the blue corner from easton, PA, wearing red trunks with white trim, he stands six-three, weighing two hundred eleven pounds, The easton assassin, Laaaryyyy Hooolmesss!! Hooolmmess!! and in the red corner, from Philadelphia, PA, wearing white trunks with black trim, he stands six-foot-one, weighing two-thirteen, The Big Bear, Chaaaaaarles Sooooonnyyyyyy Liiiiiistoooonn! Liiiistoooooon!!(loud applause)

        they are both ready.

Round 1: both men circle, with liston as the agressor. liston uses his jab and so does holmes. liston gets holmes on the ropes and works the body and head. holmes does some inside work as well, and he uses his jab to try to keep liston away. both men look pretty good as the round ends.

Round 2: liston is still pressing forward, keeping holmes on the run. holmes throws a right hand, but liston parries it well. liston is landing some good shots that holmes takes. the crowd is egging liston on to fight a good fight and liston feels the confidence growing as he cuts off the ring uses his jab and then throws a left hook that hurts holmes. holmes shakes it off, but cannot fire back as the round ends.

Round 3: holmes is still uses his jab and tries to box around liston, but he realizes that liston is too fast and he is being cornered often. so holmes decided to lay on the ropes and try to tire liston out. liston pounds his midsection and tries to take him out. holmes is hurt, but this enables him to surviv the round, although he feels a little pain as he walks back to his corner.

Round 4: liston corner holmes, and holmes tries to tire liston out, but liston's precision punching does not work as it would against foreman, and holmes can't take it anymore. holmes is dropped by a vicious left hook to the liver! holmes gets up and tries to survive the round, but is defenseless and liston's right hand drops him again with a vengeance. holmes now is trying to stay away and lasts the round.

Round 5: Again, holmes is trying to play keep away, but liston closes the gap. liston smells blood as he throws some hard, fast combinations. holmes looks out on his feet as he is getting pummeled. mark conn steps him and stops it!

buffer: "The winner at 2:00 of the fifth round via tko, chaaaarless soonyyyyyyy liiiiiistooooooooooonn!" the crowd is very happy! now liston takes a 2-1 lead in the series. now lets head over to New York City!

                vs.

Hi, and welcome to the Mechanics Pavilion in San Francisco, CA for fight #4 between james jeffries and the dancing master muhammad ali. ali will try to eliminate jeffries tonight, and jeffries will try to stay alive. ali is a 20-1 favorite to win. ali was 214 today, jeffries was 219.

ali: "This bum's done for. i'm just as good as won this fight. if this bum goes over seven rounds with me, i will leave the country and not return to the united states for 30 days, and that's final!"

well, there you have it folks. ali is now bouncing down the aisle into the ring and is warming up. now jeffries is in the ring abd the crowd goes wild. ali is once again protected by the police.

Michael Buffer: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Machanics Pavilion in Saaan Franciiso, CA! Lllllllllets get ready to ruumbllllllllle! 15 rounds in this first-round playoff. Introducing, from Houston, TX, wearing white trunks with blue trim, he stands six foot three, he weighs two hundred fourteen pounds, the Greeatesst, Muhaamaad Aaaliii!(incessant boos from all corners of the stadium) And his opponent,(loud cheers) from San Francisco, CA, he's wearing white trunks with black trim, he stands six foot two, he weighs two nineteen, the boiiiler maaakeeeeeeeer, Jaaaaaaaameessss Jeeeeeeeeeeeeefriiiieessssssss!!!!!(hysterical applause)

Now lets listen in on mark conn the referee.

Mark Conn: "protect yourself at all times. i want to to break when i tell you to break, in event of a knockdown, i want you to go to the farthest neutral corner until i tell you to come out. three knockdowns in any round, and the fight is automatically stopped. if a fighter is knocked down, he will take the mandatory eight-count. if knocked down, a fighter will be saved by the bell if the round ends before i finish the 10-count, any questions jeffries? and questions ali? ok, shake hands and come out fighting. good luck to both of you!"

Round 1: ali jabs jeffries and is throwing good combinations. jefries is throwing and missing, and ali is taking advantage. somehow, jeffries lands a vicious right hand, and ali holds on. when they are separated, there is blood on jeffries' left arm, and it's coming from ali's nose! ai rubs his nose with his gloves and he sees the blood on his gloves. ali has to be more careful. jeffries lands a few more shots, but ali's constant jabs and right hands are enough to win the round.

Round 2: Ali is now flatfooted, but his speed is still the same. jeffries throws a barrage of punches, but misses them all. ali gets in a right hand, throws a double left jab, and hits james with an uppercut and two hooks. jeffries finally hits ali with a left hook, but ali follows that up with some uppercuts that stuns jim. ali then get up on his toes and dances. jeffries hits him a couple of times, but misses ali most of the time and the round ends.

Round 3: Ali's constant jabbing and other punches have puffed up jeffries eyes. ali keeps doing this and jeffries has no answer for this. ali is throwing some hard, stinging punches and jeffries could feel them. ali then dances and keeps jabbing and jabbing, working on that eye. ali wins the round convincingly.

Round 4: Ali still is doing well, putting punches together and landing his left jab just like a piston. jefries is now cut, and ali is working on that eye some more. they get into a few clinches, and ali is able to hold his own. near the end of the round, ali is hit with some blockbuster punches, and ali is holding on. jeffries then pounds away at every part of his body. ali is stunned, but holds on as the round ends!

Round 5: Ali comes out for round 5 after the shock of his life. he keeps on the offensive, landing his punches, and now jeffries is cut again, and it is a really bad cut indeed. ali keeps working on it and busting it up some more, but ali predicted a seventh round stoppage, so ali is carrying the fight until that time. he is now taunting jeffries trying to make him look small. jim looks terrible with that cut.

Round 6: ali comes out after his manager herbert muhammad tells ali to cut out the funny business. ali then ontinues to jab and jab and jab and one-two, and on-two, and one-two-three jeffries to death. aliis doing well, landing his jab and miving out of the way of jeffries punches. ali is moving well, and boxing sharply, just as the round ends, ali sees a pretty lady in the audience and looks at her momentarily, and jeffries takes the advantage and lands a textbook left hook that sends ali into the ropes and onto the canvas, ala henry cooper! the crowd is going wild! the bell rings. and ali is up at three: dundee is trying to revive ali and ali doesn't know where he is. dundee is really giving his fighter a good talking to. ali is virtually out on his stool. ali's glove isn't torn, so that won't work. but ali has a slightly better chin now than he did in '63, so by the warning bell, ali is alright.

Round 7: ali comes out and is mad. he does not like the humiliation of being on the canvas. ali storms out and lands some shots and now the eye is really cut and bleeding. the crowd is getting more and more silent as they watch ali stagger the done fighter, and follow up with some hard punches, and down goes jeffries for the first time in this tournament! jeffries gets up at the count of 6, and a quick ali fluury sends him down again, this time for good! ali makes his prediction stick and has won the first round in four straight fights!

buffer: "the winner at 2:01 of the seventh round via ko, muhammaaaad aaliiiiii!" the crowd is silent and starts to file out quickly.

ali has won the first round and he will face either george foreman or lennox lewis next.

ali: "i'm coming after you george foreman, you slow moving mummy!"

now, lets go over to oakland for our next fight!
