Hi, an welcome to this second round western conference playoffs, where two men named Jack will square off.(Dempsey and Johnson that is) Dempsey won the first time in three rounds, can he be victorious again? dempsey was 191, and johnson was 210. one of our reporters interviewed dempsey.
reporter: Well Jack how will you keep up the momentum?
dempsey: well, i'll do what i always do. keep coming at him and don't stop.
reporter: Do you think that your confidence is built up enough that you could possibly pull off a sweep?
dempsey: I don't know. I know for sure he will be well prepared cause he won't want to lose a second time. But I should be able to win again.
reporter: thank you, jack.
Well, looks like dempsey's ready. Here is the tale of the tape.
And now Jack Johnson can be seen by the crowd and he does not exactly get a heartfelt ovation. boos can be clearly heard. Johnson is wearing a black-hooded robe. johnson gets into the ring and warms up by practicing his evading footwork.
Jack Dempsey is now in the ring and the crowd erupts in applause. dempsey is wearing a black robe. here is our ring announcer for tonight, Michael Buffer!
michael buffer: Ladieeees aaaaand geeentlemen! presenting second round fights in the western Conference! introducing, from Galveston, TX wearing gray trunks with black trim, he stands six feet one inch, weighing two hundred ten pounds, the Galveston Giaaant, Jaaack Joooohnsooon!(boos fill the arena) and his opponent, from manassah, CO, wearing solid black trunks also six one and weighs one ninety pounds, the manassah mauler Jaaaaaaaaaaaaack Deeeeeempseeeeeeeeeeeeeeey!!!(the crowd cannot control itself as they scream louder and louder) Llllllllllllllllllets get ready to ruumblllllllllllllllllllllllllllee!!!
conn: You boys both know the rules of the Colorado Stae Athletic Boxing Commision. protect yourself at all times, and break clean. shakes hands, and come out fighting!
Round 1: Dempsey is bobbing and weaving and johnson is flatfooted. again, this seems to be a methodical battle for dempsey, and a tactical battle with johnson, as johnson lets dempsey carry the fight. dempsey is lunging with hard jolting shots, and johnson pulls back from them. johnson occasionally goes in with a right hand. johnson has to use the right hand whenever he can, because that is dempsey's achilled heel. dempsey is lunging and throwing shots, but johnson is able to either parry them, or tie dempsey up.
Round 2: Now dempsey realizes that johnson is on to his plan, so he is more cautious. dempsey moves in and out and johnson jabs a little. johnson seems to be using the same guidelines that the legendary gene tunney used in his fight with dempsey. johnson looks pretty fast on his feet at the moment, as dempsey cannot seem to find the target. johnson is countering well with hard lefts and rights. johnson is boxing well, and tying dempsey up when necessary. johnson does well in this round.
Round 3: Dempsey is still in his croutch, looking for that one big punch to take johnson out of there. at this point, johnson is too fast for dempsey. johnson has learned well from his last series with max schmeling, for max also alot of the time fights from the panther-like croutch that dempsey impliments. Jack (johnson that is )is now landing solid rights to dempsey's face, but he takes them, and dempsey has his jaw tucked in to minimize the damage. johnson is scoring well, and dempsey keeps coming in, but everytime he does that, johnson is right there to hold him off with his superior strength.
Round 4: Johnson is in his stance, periodically lunging in with some hard shots that jarrs dempsey. dempsey still keeps coming in, and johnson throws a lightning fast fluury that sends dempsey to the canvas! dempsey is up at 3, but he takes the standing eight count. dempsey fights back though, landing his trademark left hook and johnson is a little shaken up, but when dempsey follows up, he still has enough strength to neutralize him in a clinch. johnson recovers, and so does dempsey from that knockdown. they fight on, and from then on, it's pretty even, but johnson's knockdown was enough for the judges to smile in his favor.
Round 5: Johnson is now carrying the attack, for dempsey is a bit tired from lunging at him all night, but dempsey holds strong. johnson is doing well, and holds his hands up in perfect position to protect his chin. dempsey just can't seem to penetrate his defense. dempsey however is not frustrated, but he presses on. johnson hurts dempsey again with a right, and now dempsey is hurt. johnson is now teeing off on jack's face, and gets him on the chin once, but jack survives the barrage and they continue until the round ends.
Round 6: Dempsey now goes out like a madman. he throws thunderous shots, only to be twisted up by johnson's powerful arms in the clinches. johnson is patient and methodical. he now has dempsey's face well swollen and on the verge of cuts. if he does cut dempsey, it will be a remarkable thing, cause dempsey skin is tough as nails and it is very hard to cut his skin because of the daily ritual he performs of rubbing beef brine into his skin to make it hard! johnson is now hitting dempsey with good shots, but dempsey fights back landing two right hands and a left hook, but johnson takes them well, and he comes baqck with some shots of his own before the bell ending the round sounds off.
Round 7: Dempsey is still moving in, but with not as much of the tenacity that he exhibited in the earlier rounds. johnson realizes that dempsey is weary, and he capitalizes off of this. a jolting right uppercut and a left hook stuns dempsey. dempsey holds on, but johnson is again right on him with solid punches and dempsey goes down! dempsey is up at five, and johnson gets right on him with solid head punches and jolting shots to the midsection. dempsey is staggering right now, and johnson tries to finish, but the bell saves dempsey.
Round 8: Johnson, knowing dempsey might have recovered is more patient now. dempsey is bobbing and weaving, and johnson uses his jab a little. dempsey gets under his jab and lands his left hook, but johnson presses on. dempsey throws another left hook and johnson parries it, and gets in a left lead and an overhand right, followed by a left uppercut and a right cross, and dempsey is down again! he is up at eight, and johnson follows up with smashing combos and dempsey hits the mat four the fourth time. dempsey is up at seven, takes the eight count and continues, even thought his face is slightly cut and he clearly is light headed from the punishment he had been taking. johnson moves in and dempsey is defenseless against the sharpness of the Galvestonian's punches. dempsey's head is rocked back, and he is not fighting back. so at this point mark conn's arm is pulled. he separates the two and waivs his hands signaling that the fight is over.
buffer: the winner by a knockout, at 2:57 seconds of the third round, Jaaack Joohnsooon!
The crowd is stunned.johnson smiles to the crowd and walks out happy. that was great that johnson evened it up. now lets go over to Boston.
Hi, and Welcome to Boston Garden in Boston, MA, for the second meeting between Rocky Marciano and Sonny Liston in the eastern Conference. Rocky was 188 today and liston was 215. lets see the tale of the tape.
I had a chance to interview the Brockton Blockbuster.
butterfly1964: How do you plan to beat liston this time around Rock?
marciano: I have to get under his long jab, but I know I can do it.
Now Liston makes his way to the ring, and a few boos could be heard, while he walks down the aisle accompanied by his trainer Willie Reddish. and Marciano comes in and 65,000 fans show their appreciation for the Brockton Blockbuster. Rocky is accompanied by his long time trainer, Charlie Goldman. now here is michael buffer.
michael buffer: Ladies and gentlemen, introducing from Philadelphia, PA wearing white trunks with black trim, he stands six feet one, weighing 215, The Big Bear, Charrles Sonny Liston! Liston! and his opponent, from brockton, MA wearing black trunks with white trim, standing five eleven, weighing one hundred eighty-eight pounds, The Brockton Blockbusteeeeeeer Roooockyyyyyyyy Maaaarrcianooooooooooo!!! Marcianooooooooooooo!!(the crowd applaudes rocky) 15 rounds!
conn: protect yourself at all times. in the event of a knockdown, i want you to go to the farthest neutral corner until I tell you to come out. three knockdown rule is waived. any questions? ok, shake hands.
once again, liston stares hard at marciano. marciano stares back in anticipation.
Round 1: again marciano is in his croutch, and he tries to press the fight, but liston again keeps him away with his jab. marciano is throwing wild hard shots and a couple land, but liston walks right through them. liston lands well, and both men get into a slugfest. marciano is shaken up, but marciano holds and conn separates the two men.liston lands his straight right well, and marciano manages to get a right hand shot in that gains liston's respect. liston is jabbing and jabbing and throwing the occasional straight right and marciano is taking the punches. they clinch, and liston uses his superior strength to push marciano off once again. This time marciano survives the round.
Round 2: Liston and the rock both press the fight, and again they trade, and marciano is hurt again, but marciano's iron will withstands the onslaught. liston moves in and throws his left hook and it misses, and marciano counters with his famous suzie q, and liston is shook up a bit and clinches. he recovers quickly and he continues to jab and use his right hand. marciano ducks under alot of the punches, and manages to get in some of his own.
Round 3: Marciano is trying to get through liston thick jab and long reach, but liston holds him off. those jabs are hurting rocky, but he still moves in, throwing big shots that miss due to the distance between them thanks to liston's jab. marciano still keeps coming forward, liston uses his jab, but marciano ducks under it and lands a big uppercut, but listonpays it no mind as he throws some hard shots of his own. but marciano's croutching style makes liston miss. it's a pretty even round.
Round 4: Liston comes out throwing bombs. a few land, but marciano takes them. marciano throws some wild shots of his own, and some connect, stunning liston. marciano follows upwith solid body blows. liston recovers and get marciano against the ropes. but marciano holds and conn separates them. marciano is doing much better in this fight than the last one, for he is able to execute his game plan much better. marcianolands a big right hand that again stuns liston! marciano follows up and now has liston against the ropes and marciano keeps throwing a lot of punches. marciano is getting on liston similar to the way marciano got on top of evander holyfield in the first round. non-stop action. somehow, this gladiator never stops throwing punches. liston is at this point out on his feet and defenseless, but the bell saves him from a stoppage.
Round 5: Liston is a little shaken up, but he battles back from it blocking marciano's blows and landing some of his own. liston uses his jab effectively and a big left hook stuns marciano. liston wants to make marciano pay for that last round as he corners marciano and pummels him. liston throws literal atomic fusion bombs with lightning speed and pinpoint accuray to the body and jaw. marciano cannot survive this tremendous punishment and he crumbles to the canvas. marciano is slow in getting up and liston finishges him off much like he did cleveland williams with crisp body shots and slegehammer blows to rocky's temple. marciano goes down for good. it was a good effort by marciano, but not enough.
michel buffer: The winner by a knockout at 1:36 of the fifth round, Sonny Lisston!
The crowd quickly files out of the stadium in dissapointment, once again.
liston: He hits hard, he nearly had me in the fourth, but I knew what I had to, when I had to do it. I think it's in the bag, and a fight with either tyson or louis is inevitable.
Great action. this is what i'm talking about. non-stop action from two great sluggers, and a suprise ending. well, that was alot, so I think i'll end it here. once again the final scores are, Part1-johnson tko8, and Part2-liston ko5!
