? He has quite a good resume, depending... Certainly when we include is whole range, light heavy included ahem.. Hopkins was superb, a technical accomplished guy who fought well way past twilight... But ATG is ATG for a reason! Not every superb fighter is an ATG. You trash him but he as far as fighters that fought around at different weight classes, Hopkins did very well. To say a fighter like Charlie Burley beats him is kind of like saying, "I lost an argument about Nuclear Fission to some wild haired guy named Einstein.

What was so great about Nonpareil Jack Dempsey other than being the inaugural middleweight champion? Admittedly i dont know a lot about his competition, but looking at his resume.....is it really better than Hopkins?
Hopkins is one of those that I define as having "good problems." Like: Jeez I gots too much money, what can I do with it? Hopkins was fantastic with respect to range. He fought smaller but also bigger, and was dominant against some decent hombres (Winky and Tarver amongst). I also think he arguably won many fights the judges gave to the other guy, and was not a ducker. With all that said, Middle weight is packed, and the guys that stand out, including those cited, just IMO did a little more at the weight.

Them Apples in his usual flourish made a post that better describes how I feel about it than I could write! Lol.

Burley isn't that good. Hopkins gives him a very good fight. Burley never comes close to stoping a prime Hopkins. Maybe he wins a "Maxie Rosenbloom" points win. But he does not dominate Hopkins.

I am no Hopkins' fan. First time I saw him was Jones (I). After three rounds Hopkins went into a defensive shell and Jones was satisfied to let him. They stood in front of eachother for eight or so rounds. I lost interest in both of them.

Burley was a complex character... He could be fantastic, and at times, less than stellar. He came from a background of Humanists with a socialist bent. Did Hopkins ever dominate a fighter on the level of Archie Moore? That would be the basis for my judgement. Hopkins outfoxed a game Kelley Pavlic... But that is a bit of a disparity. I believe the fight would look like Hopkins versus Jones... Not a domination for sure, but a clear winner. Burley was not a "stopper" nor was he a cold blooded killer, like Cus Amato intimated a boxer had the legal right to be... What he was was precise about distance and timing. His one filmed fight was extremely revealing. Hopkins tendency to take a bit of time off now and then would not serve him well. Burley would exploit it

I actually am a big Hopkins fan, I weigh over 250 pounds! (sorry could not resist!), but seriously I have always loved watching Hopkins ply his trade. Rosenbloom was another interesting character...

there is also a possibility that the fight would stink the joint out so to speak... But I agree stoppages would not be a part of this contest.

I’d pick Burely twice on a Sunday based on who he was fighting and who he beat. We don’t know enough about how Burely fought - but those that did all said the same thing - he was a fighter with incredibly top tier capability. It’s hard to judge when we are up against fighters that may have got more fame and recognition but weren’t necessarily better fighters. Ricky Hatton for example
