    I was wrong. It lingered on for a year. (WHW CHAMPION) Moving from Pelkey to Smith to Capentier. Georges won it in England about a month after JJ defended against Moran. *

    By then the "title" was in France and Carpentier doesn't seem to have cared about it. I guess it was simply forgotten.

    * That would be just around the same time JJ was leaving for Argentina. Wonder why no JJ-Carpentier fight was ever proposed.

    I also wonder if "it" would have gotten legs under it had Smith returned with the title. Would Smith have gotten the shot at JJ in Havana instead?

    P.S. I figured the Baer thing was a publicity stunt just no details. Thanks for naming the other fighter. I am going to look for a fight poster or newspaper article and see if it is mentioned.

      There was a ten rounder with Dempsey refereeing. Boxrec gives it no credit.

      This Pat Comiskey was a bear himself. Impressive career. 74-12 with 61 KOs - stopped only twice.

        Carpentier lost a disputed decision to Joe Jeannette in 1914 so if there was talk of a JJ fight that probably derailed it. Before that his heavyweight resume is very weak. After that not much better until a DQ win over Gunboat Smith which appears to be the last "white championship " title fight. Moving on there is nothing noteworthy for him at heavyweight until 1919 and the EBU european heavyweight title win against Joe Beckett which looks like a decent win. After that he got Dempsey a year and a half later and we all know how that went. I never saw Carpentier as a great fighter in comparison to so many others. His status as a war hero certainly propelled his career and made him some good money though.

          He was an actor either before or after his boxing career. Good on him. Not world class from the way his record reads, but a tough guy just the same.

            - - Prior to Louis' fight, Lee Savold was recognized as the White Champ and as Heavyweight Champion by the British Boxing Board of Control;
            following this fight, the BBBC recognized Louis until he was beaten by Rocky Marciano.

            Louis never claimed his White Title, but he whooped the standing champ for his last title that he gets no credit for which is umpteen X more than Tubby Lar ever did.

              Interesting tidbit of information. To bad you have to resort to trolling at the same time. I'm curious where you found this because at a quick glance I only see him holding the EBU (British) heavyweight title.

                  Savold was never the White champion of anything.

                    When Carpentier refereed Johnson v Moran, he was asked if he was interested in a fight with Jack,he said I am not ready for him yet.
                    Smith wasn't any too keen to fight Johnson either.

                      I don't think Carpentier was ever really that special.His record at Lhvy is poor and apart from feasting on a particularly poor crop of UK heavyweights,I don't believe he did much at all.
                      The dsq over Smith was extremely controversial ,and a referee applying a bit more common sense,might well have been more lenient towards Smith.
