YES!! Totally agree with this!! I think rankings unfortunately become a crutch for some, supporting intellectual lack of effort. I could not give a shiat about any formal rankings system, much preferring to see a well thought out list here from one of our many posters. I particularly admire such an undertaking because: I suck at making lists, and I hate scoring fights...anyone who does either has my respect.

I remember him on Classic ,think he called himself Glaukos or something similar? Glucose?
He was always trying to stimulate debate about the ancient cestus fighters etc .nobody gave a **** about them and he drifted away, or was invited to leave,I can't remember which ,and its unimportant.
He used to fly into rages at the slightest thing ,it became something of a standing joke there
.He thought he was some great expert who was much too good for the rest of us,and didn't need any encouragement to tell everyone! The first couple of posts he made,I thought he was having a wind up,then I realised he was deadly serious!
He used to crack me up ,rambling on about some guys called Mythos or Sonoros. from the 4th Century BC or whenever, whom nobody had ever heard of and couldn't care less about.
Meanwhile there were real knowledgeable posters there such as Henry Hascup,Joe Rein,Springs Toledo,Steve Compton,Adam Pollack,Clay Moyle ,Rumsfeld ,Ted Spoon etc, with whom people wanted to exchange opinions and compare notes with.

Some deviants are obvious, some inadvertently only let a few clues slip out. Some think they are on a scholarly mission; that could be a clue right there.

I see this place as a small society of deviants I more or less adore. A family. One deviant balances another. From disagreements I learn much. A war of facts causes you to take sides. You can only reasonably do that after you have been forced to ascertain the actual facts of the matter for yourself by doing some research. So the opportunity is always there to learn from a war of facts.

Doesn't matter if it is not exclusive... That is the whole point... To be perfectly clear: Using a ratings system unanchored to any other support to claim a fighter, is great, or some conclusion about boxing is illogical. There has to be some other information involved. Using rankings in addition to other information is an entirely different matter. Calling someone something that suggests they emphasize these ratings would lead a normal reasonable person to assume such a person is relying upon them in an unreasonable way.

I have never seen Ivitch do it. If you did see it, then state it, otherwise I stand by my comment. I am sorry you are miffed but I am sick of people here making statements about others that are unsubstantiated. It is wrong and it starts rumors.

Ivitch, regardless of what one thinks of him supports his positions... One can disagree with them for sure, thats great, but the difference is: some people support a contention SIMPLY by citing a ratings system. Daggum is a perfect example of such a person, Z does it at times as well...

Edit: let me amend the above to include one who places any undo emphasize on that which is a relative ranking... So there is no splitting hairs about the use of these rankings.

The problem is one of anchoring: if I give you a list of the 5 toughest fighters... It makes a difference whether they are cub scouts, or HOF boxers. Any Ring ranking is relative to the strength of boxing, the division. Daggum is my favorite... He thinks that because Wilder has not beat fighters ranked by one of the major rankings, it makes an objective difference... even when every fighter in the ranking is a big, slow Euro-amatuer backgrounded scrub. He feels that this ranking materially affects the fact that Wilder has fought Fury competatively, beat Ortiz who was undefeated, etc. I don't get that logic bub!
