    - - Great, so what did you think of Ernie Ladd vs Ali pre Vietnam strippage?

Walter Payton vs Jim Brown, so who's best prime to prime?

If I needed 4 yards or less, I'd take Brown, anything else I'd take Payton. Thats no offense to Brown, who was an amazing football player, athlete, person; but Walter Payton was the best RB I've ever seen and possibly the most complete football player. You watch film on him and his only flaw is getting a little loose with how he held the ball. Brown is every bit of the athlete Payton is and better in some aspects, but Payton was more complete as a football player.

Ernie Ladd was a monster of a human being, but I always have a hard time in evaluating the athlete vs boxer type thing with such little in ring (other than wrestling) evidence to judge on.

Honestly, I'd be happy enough if I asked if they knew who Roman Gonzalez was, and could rattle off 3 off his past fights. Not many people nowadays have a high level of boxing knowledge, even 80%+ (at a guess) of boxing fans only really watch the A-List names - Canelo, Fury, Joshua, etc. In England, names such as Whyte, Chisora, Warrington, a few more, they attract a big casual audience who are football fans first and foremost.

A casual fan can have boxing knowledge, but it's usually on a very limited scope, and generally limited to 1-4 weight divisions at a max. Nash out - ATG Boxing expert.

          - - Fairplay, but I don't rate Brown so highly since Marion Motley in hightop basketball shoes because no football cleats then could fit him has a much higher yard per carry average and could block, tackle, and play defense, none of which Brown would even consider.

Brown a running back was out run by Wilt twice in impromptu footraces and never in the Ali Sweepstakes like Wilt was.

Payton faster, quicker, with move moves and likely stronger could block and tackle and accumulated his all time yardage on a weak team where defenses could key on him knowing he got the ball 70% of the time. Payton the guy you want in the fox hole next to you in a war, not Brown who was the all time diva on a very strong Browns team.

Easy. Who they consider the best ever. If they say Robinson, Ali or Louis, they usually know their stuff. If they say someone more recent, like Mayweather or Fury, they're usually moronic, arrogant, egomaniacal f***heads and aren't worth my time.

I simply do not believe that football fans know more about football than boxing fans know about boxing. Football fans know what a forward pass is and boxing fans know what a lefhook is. I believe I can find a one to one correspondence for anything you can say football fans know, and match it with something boxing fans know.

Maybe the OP is saying they have a better feel or intuition. But both can feel the tide of a game or match changing. Both watch stats closely. Both know the rules.

Or maybe the OP means lots of people who are very marginal fans of boxing will still, when questioned, profess to be boxing fans. A certain number of people will always gather around to watch a fight in the street, but that does not make them boxing fans, no matter what they profess or how they identify, unless they actually are. Some bearded fellows identify as women, by buggery, but of course that does not make them a woman. Few people gather to watch a sandlot baseball game, but a fight is much more exciting and critical, so more people gather.

A real fan of either is nearly identical, i.e. knows almost every rule, knows the history of the fighter or team, knows the managers, knows some stats, knows the ramifications of a rule change or an equipment change. On and on.

There are only 24 teams to choose from, or whatever, but hundreds of boxers. Yet fans study their favorite boxers intently. I believe there are simply fewer boxing fans than football fans. Drunken idiots at barbecues and beerathons have about the same quantity of information, whether their passion be football, baseball or boxing, IMHO.

The question is: Will I talk to someone at all? If I will talk to them at all, then I will also talk boxing with them.

Boxingscene.com proves everyday that most boxing fans don't know **** about boxing.

Well, I agree but I'd stop just short of calling Jim Brown an amazing person, for pretty much the identical reason I'd stop just short of calling Carlos Monzon an amazing person. Lol.

Me: Did you ever watch Chavez's fights?

Them: Do you mean Hasim Chavez Jr?

                  Me: Goodbye kind sir.

An answer can be relative to the question asked. Got to ask the right question. To a new guy Chavez Jr. ain't necessarily wrong.

FACT: Micky Mantle had 372 Home runs over his career
