Being small, powerful, teakwood tough and yes, being the one and only heavyweight to get out undefeated are. A 1949 opponent, Johnny Pretze worked for me in the early 80's. A super nice fellow and a tough bastard too. He was a Boston area fixture and was noted for having taught Boston Mayor Ray Flynn to box at the Boys Club. Several years later, front page of the Boston Globe, Pretze was shot and killed while beating daylights out of an off duty cop who was half his age and twice his size. The policeman said that he pulled his sidearm because ""I was taking a fearful beating and I feared for my life".
"Pretzie gave Marciano more trouble than all of his previous opponents, but was thoroughly beaten. Johnny defended himself well but lacked the stamina and punch needed to cope with Marciano. Rocky showed no boxing skill at all; just strength and a punch. Pretzie was floored once in round four and three times in round five before the referee topped the fight. 3595 fans attended; gross gate $6, 821."

He might have thrown his weight about but he was 69 and the other guy was in his early 30's ,cowardly act to shoot an unarmed man imo.

When 90% of your reputation is based on your 49-0-0 unbeaten record posters are entitled, in fact obliged to scrutinise who you actually fought.
Cherry picking is cherry picking whatever way you slice it and many of Marciano's opponents were overmatched stiffs.
Louis was37 having his last fight
Savold 36 Having his last fight
Mathews as a hyped light heavy
Walcott was 38having his last fight
Lastarza did not merit a title shot.
Charles had nearly 100 fights on his clock and had lost 2 of his last 4
Moore according to his Mother was 41.
          No Valdes,no Henry,noBaker,no Walls,noHarrison,no Jackson/
          - - Fool Queensbury a subversive plant set in place to upend U light in the loafers.

Louis Ring ranked, #5 as I recall last fight or not.

Savold the BBB of c recognized World Champ and White Champ to boot perfectly situated even in death to boot U miscreant keister to Timbuktu via Bolivia.

Matthews: All ranked fighters are hyped.

Walcott also ranked and former world champ. U prob blow out U shorts if Rocky fought a lesser fighter.

Lastarza was a touted young gun problematic for Rocky the first fight. The boxing fraternity then and now don't consult light in the loafer blowhards like U.

Charles former champ and Ring ranked came closest to beating Rocky in their first fight, and under today's officiating would've got the stoppage.

Moore's mother is it now? Moore won an unofficial eliminator by whooping superheavy Nino Valdes to earn the right to face Rocky.

It's like U was born yesterday yet again today to rack up a world record setting of today's consecutive yesterdays...

The first Charles fight went the distance,Charles whom Valdes had beaten was chosen over Valdes.Moore didnt beat Valdes till 55.You thick prick!
Two fights before challenging Marciano for the title Lastaza was beaten and floored by a journeyman lhvy.

Valdes lost to Moore in 1953. It was one of the four straight loses he suffered between 1952-1953. It likely it contributed to him being ignored.

Yes 53 and 55 but in between he posted 11 wins and 3 of them were ranked. It was a better current record than Charles whom he had beaten.

Safe to say that Marciano did not fully clean house during his tenure as champion; but his reign was more than credible. Were there contenders who serve today as glaring omissions from his resume? Certainly. Anyone really outstanding for whom the case can be made that he was ducked by Rocky's management braintrust? Nope. Baker, Valdez, Wallace (the latter who beat Marciano in the amateurs) and the rest were all flawed and floundered. Walcott, Charles as former champions, Lastarza as a you owe him one guy, and Moore as the clean up man were the right choices, if the sheer number had to be limited. And given his "Buckets of Blood" style with that short reach; he often needed plenty of healing up time between chapters. Doesn't detract a thing from his legacy; which is built upon other (obvious) stuff.

Lastarza didn't warrant a title shot imo.Wallace wasnt much.
I see Valdes as the only standout Rocky missed, and as such I think that was a duck by his management though it would have been nice to see him against the likes of Baker, and Henry.I'd pick him to beat all three but that's not the point.
