Marciano fans may be warned not to step in it here, but Q.O.O. is not among The Rock's top qualifications for all-time greatness. Great though he may be.
LaStarza was skilled, tough and pretty quick. The 1950 fight was a pick em'. In the rematch Marciano ruined him and packed the college grad off to Hollywood to star in the television show "The Gallant Men".
Rex Layne was a powerful football player and beet farmer who won the 49' national AAU title, so he could box. Like the Rock he posted wins over Charles & Walcott. Both LaStarza and Layne were pegged as future champions early in their careers and may have been if not for a cut here, an upset there and Marciano.
Don ****ell was one of those soft looking guys who can beat up weightlifter types under any rules, any day, and although a career lightheavyweight, once he moved up and beat Beshore, Slade and Johnny Williams he was the best the UK could offer the world between Bruce Wood**** and Joe Erskine.
Harry Kid Matthews like ****ell was small even by Oleksandr Usyk standards, but he could fight. He masterd Eddie Booker of the famed muderers row, and Ezzard Charles as well.
All four guys achieved contender status between 1950 and 55', and along with Walcott, Charles, Louis, Savold, Baker, Valdez, Henry, Oma, Norkus, Holman, Satterfield, Walace, Johnson, Reynolds, Beshore, Gardner, Maxim, Wilson, Gilliam, Shkor, Vingo, Brion, Cavicchi, Bucceroni, Bivins, Neuhaus, Agramonte, Mederos, Kahut, Barone, Bean, Ten Hoff, Harrison, Doc Williams, Henry, Slade, Davidson, Baksi, Marshall, Sys; and all 4 represent the best that Marciano's era could provide him for challenders. Nobody stood out as better than the men who received a shot while Rocky ruled the roost. A couple would have feathered the champion's resume nicely, but they kept flubbing a contest just as their name came up.
We think of him as smallish, but Ukrainian-Light towers over many of the aforementioned ghosts of the nifty-fifties, and although I still view Usyk as a WIP, I take him over the four foils mentioned.

Lastarza was a protected fighter kept well away form the Iron of the division.Layne got a gift against Charles.
****ell was flattened by Slade in4 rds.

time: 2:39 | referee: Andrew Smyth
Slade floored ****ell twice in the first round. After a nearly even second round, Slade sent ****ell down again in the third for a "7" count. In the fourth round, ****ell was dropped twice more and "was now a mere punching bag, " causing the referee to stop the fight. (See Boxing News, December 12, 1951, page 4.
****ell beat Beshore on cuts, his nemesis.Beshore had won 2 of his last 7 fights.

Mathews beat a totally washed up Charles. Booker stopped Mathews in5 rds.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Booker got off to a slow start and allowed Matthews to outbox him early in the bout. In the 4th round he gradually began to beat Matthews up to the body. In the 5th round, the referee stopped the bout. Booker was purportedly protecting a cut he had sustained in a previous fight

"Eddie Booker of San Francisco defeated Harry Matthews of Emmett, Idaho, by a TKO at Coliseum Bowl last night when referee Frankie Brown halted the bout in the 5th round after Matthews had suffered a terrific body beating. Matthews, who went in at 163 to Booker's 165, fought one good round - the 2nd - winning it with a solid left, which shook Booker. Booker was in no trouble, however, either then or later as he concentrated everything into a punishing body attack." -United Press
Valdes stood out as the number one contender for 2 years.Valdes proved he was better than ****ell when he ran him over in3 rds ,flooring him for an 8 count along the way.
Usyk would toy with those guys imo.

I give Spinks and a cruiserweight Holyfield a good shot to beat Usyk at 200

            - - Spinks, yes, but not scrawny 190 lb Vander who near died after his first fight with tubby Qawi whom Spinks shut out and chased out of the LH division.

Usyk wouldn't be physical like Qawi

                - - Vander couldn't box. He'd try to strength Usyk unsuccessfully. Usyk has a vast superior heavy record going back to the Olympic Gold.

Briedis nearly pulled it off on Usyk with that strategy

Holyfield was robbed of a probable Olympic gold. in the semi finals. To say he couldn't box is the height of ignorance.
