A Corner Without a Cut Man Is a Costly Way to Cut Corners

Don Turner, Evander Holyfield’s trainer, rejected having cut man Ace Marotta in Holyfield’s corner for last Friday night’s heavyweight championship fight against Michael Moorer.

“Cut men are the biggest scam in boxing,” Turner told Ron Borges of the Boston Globe. “These guys fly in and they eat like they’re going to the electric chair and you know what? The fighter pays.”

As it turned out, Holyfield suffered a deep cut over his left eye in the second round and, without an established cut man, bled much of the rest of the fight. Also, much of Turner’s time between rounds was spent working on the cut instead of advising Holyfield, who lost a majority decision.

      Holyfield’s usual cut man’s cut? $25,000.

      Cutman Incident[edit]

He is credited as being the man who convinced Evander Holyfield that the cutman is "the biggest scam in boxing."[2] During the heavyweight championship bout, Holyfield suffered a cut above his left eye which kept reopening during the match, affecting his vision. The lack of a cutman is thought to have been a determining factor that cost Holyfield the match.

      - - Holy said he had a "hard heart" and retired.

I don't know I have some apprehension with this guy Marotta.

I prefer my cut men to be legendary. A mere established cut man just doesn't get me there.

In fact I am not sure I have ever heard of a non-legendary cut man.

I thought it was a rule, they all had to be legendary? Maybe it was just an HBO rule, but I'm pretty sure The Ring Magazine always confirmed legendary status as well.

I really don't get it. He seems to have all the right credentials, like a really cool first name "Ace" - but I just can't bring myself to trust a cut man who isn't legendary.

Maybe this guy Ace Marotta only has one arm or something bad like that?

25K is pretty good for a night's work, (plus it seems all you can eat), I wonder how much a real cut man, a legendary cut man, makes for a fight?

One of the key points that Marciano mentions when he is commenting on his own fights, is his ability to stay low... I think its important to get that perspective because when we know a fighter is great and we get their own perspective it really compounds the knowledge... A great example of this is Dempsey who wrote one of the great books on punching. So his methods are there to see, and then can be understood during his fights, not to mention how much one can learn.

Marciano was a terrific commentator,it is our loss that he wasn't snapped up by a net work to demonstrate how good he was

                    - - A chuckle here, a chuckle there, and soon enough you've chucked enough wood for a woodchucker if a woodchucker could chuck wood.

I left off the part where some faith healer, Binny HaHa or something cured Holy in front of his congregation so he could return to boxing. Without Binny, we'd never had Belfort.
