They were both exiled from Boxing for roughly the same amount of time and both came back at ~29 years old. Ali however had a second coming that would define his legacy, Tyson not so much. Why the difference?
Why was Ali's return from exile that much more successful than Tysons?

Difference: One fight - Zaire.
Without Zaire even Manilla is not a championship fight; not 15 rounds; not dramatic. -

Let's see. Ali did better. He beat better opponents and won back the lineal title twice more, further cementing his legacy as an ATG heavyweight. I'd say that's pretty damn successful.Comment

Post comeback, Ali has several gift decisions that went in his favor too. Twice in the rematches with Norton, Jimmy Young, and very controversial decisions over Frazier II and Shavers. If he loses the first Norton rematch as he should have, the remainder of his career probably takes a different trajectory.Comment

Tyson was knocked out by Buster Douglas before his prison stint. He had already slipped considerably before his career had been interrupted.Comment

Ali
A. Was a better fighter so he was able to beat a better grade of opponents in his past-it stage.
B. Had a better grade of opponents to beat by far.
C. 's layoff didn't degrade his abilities as much as Tyson's did.Last edited by StarshipTrooper; 04-18-2022, 09:57 PM.Comment
