  • What I Want #1

I'm a five weightclass guy, not eight.

    Featherweight - 100 to 125

    Lightweight - 125 to 145

    Middleweight - 145 to 175

    Light Heavyweight - 175 to 205

    Heavyweight - 205 to U

Five belts - let casuals learn to enjoy an elimination bout and repect a great contender. See what a true champion looks like.

Weight-ins one hour before the fight. No cutting down and rehydrating. Fighting at your natural weight is healthier.

Those are some big weight gaps.

    Teofimo vs. Beterbiev = murder

Yea maybe I need six - but no more.

But can Beterbiev come in under 145 without cutting down?

Remember no cutting weight; one hour pre-fight weigh-ins.

        How come you skipped welterweight?

I get this. If there is one aspect to boxing's longstanding freelance, cutthroat, short-sighted, scumbag-harboring business model that has always angered me against the extreme nobility of the fighters themselves and the purity of the event; it's the lack of clarity presented to the fans, and more importantly, to prospective fans.
Too many unnessisary championships, to say nothing of the existence of multiple peddlers of those titles is a significant subset of this malady.
Boiling them down to as few as possible, as you've done here is a walk back to simplicity and reason. Of course, my attentions are drawn right away to percent of body weight, where 20 pounds doesn't imply as much to a Heavyweight as it might a lightweight. Then there is the disconnect with history and the relative stability of long extablished weight classifications; important mostly to a history buff such as myself, who sees the value of historical boxing vs. New rules combat featuring, let us say only open handend strikes allowed and groin squeezing encouraged, as "exciting new features", for example.
Nevertheless, I endorse the gist of this.
How often I've considered my size and that of the grown men who are sitting around me; almost all heavyweights. Thinking that weight divisions where I'm from would logically read under 130, 145, 165, 185, 195, 205, 215, 225, over 225 to unlimited.
In broader context, the Cleaning up of Boxing and stopping just short of the disgusting circus troupe cum pro wrestling model of MMA, which serves the packaging and selling of the the sport as a whole infinitely better but does so with the near absolute exclusion of any participant with a shread of self worth or self confidence, has for some 4-plus decades been a matter of very keen interest to me.
.....but THAT, is a real rant.

IM all for it. Simplicity is always a virtue... I would, as several posters noted, keep welterweight. I don't think we should give a weight limit to heavyweight because if a guy walks around at like 270 he has to get to a weight where he can throw punches and move... We wind up encouraging bad boxing.

What do you think about the one hour pre-fight weight-ins?

I believe it would be healthier for fighters to fight at their natural weight but I am not sure how to discourage drastic weight loss and rehydration.

I have no medical training but I have to believe that constant denial of nutrition has to make the body weaker and susceptible to injury and disease..

IMO we need to find a way that favors a fighter canstantly wanting to make himself bigger not smaller. (And of course not by using PEDS.)

                    Featherweight - 100 to 125

                    Lightweight - 125 to 145

                    Welterweight - 145 to 160

                    Middleweight - 160 to 175

                    Light Heavyweight - 175 to 205

                    Heavyweight - 205 to U

Yea, I must admit that seems better.

Truth be told now I feel like I want to split the Featherweight and add in a Flyweight.

Maybe the eight weight classes are time tested correct and I should leave well enough alone.

But no Super/Jr. Weight classes, no never.
