I remember Holyfield saying something similar about his first fight with Bowe. He said he knew he was still in the fight because he could still feel the punches and it's when you don't feel them anymore when you're in trouble. Reminds me of a great quote from my favorite TV series Life on Mars (UK) when Nelson the bartender says about life and death "If you can feel, then you're alive. When you don't, then you're not."

Its the old situation where the guy is shot, is screaming, cursing... and the paramedic says "hurts huh? good... means you will make it."

Interesting you mention that because in Life on Mars, the main character ends up in the world he's in because of an injury. In his case, being hit by a car and sent into a coma. Hence the alive and not alive speech he gets. In the follow up series, Ashes to Ashes though, that main character actually is shot to end up in that same limbo.

'When a real roundhouse right lands, it breaks a nose and un-caps a geyser of blood. Wild punches that do land, as opposed to movie punches, re-sculpt faces in unpleasant ways. Fist fights are extremely dangerous and not in artful ways. Try a roundhouse haymaker against a professional and you will neither land the blow, nor remain upright through the next minute, let alone the round. The pro will beat you to the punch with a short left that he drives quickly and clinically inside your wild right. Should you retain consciousness, the professional's right cross will immediately alter that state.'
