"Jeff, you old pile driver, you'll have to find a new punching bag. I haven't got a place on my body that could stand a blow from a bloomin' kid. When I walk I rattle like a broken down stove. My face feels like a plowed field, and I can hardly sleep at night because I can't lie in any position but what I am lying on is a bunch of bruises. I'm going to California to hire a medicine man to doctor me up. You get a new exercise machine, me to a sanitarium" - Joe Kennedy

That stuff is why I love this forum nonsense. I found that because folks were talking about Jeffries here and while I don't have a Jeff book, I do have some books covering his period. I found that one in Peter Maher by Matt Dunnellon, one of my personal favorites because of the back of the book.
In the back end of the book Matt goes above and beyond the call of duty for a biographical covering one man. He goes through the records of men Peter fought and gives a small narrative to the types of men they were. Index from Jeff's name brings me to a page with Kennedy's record and with in the small bio about Joe there was that gem of a quote.
I've read that book a ton of times actually but there's so much I can't possibly remember every time someone said something cool. Here we find prompts to take closer looks and then whole other threads when we find something we didn't mean to.I planned on posting in a Jeffries thread what I think of Jeffries but I didn't get that far. I read that and a like a kid I was like oo oo oo Quote thread that one!

'Living might be more complicated than dying to me. The belief of it. I don’t know if it’s true. Because living takes a lot of courage. Without the courage, you can’t handle living. Living is a journey; living is a struggle. People have everything and they still can’t do it, they struggle. We take ourselves too seriously. We think we’re somebody.'

'A pugilist is not presumed to have high ideals. By some he is believed to have brutish tendencies, and at best to be concerned only with material things. The possession of muscular strength and the courage to use it in contests with other men for physical supremacy, does not necessarily a lack of appreciation for the finer and better things in life. Brutish qualities and base inclinations are prevalent in all cases. A man's vocation is no measure of his inner feelings nor a guarantee of his earnest desire to live right or attain the highest standards.'

'I am trying to give the people what they want in boxing. I bleed! I'm a heck of a fighter, I'm a people's champion and I've also got love for the game. People love to see those things and I give it to them.'

'Growing up, my father told us that he gave us tools to survive. And a lot of negativity. 'You're no good. You're a failure. You're not going to amount to anything.' And I carried that with me. So when I lost to Holmes, I kind of felt that. And I went into a depression, instead of realizing I just went 13 rounds with one of the greatest heavyweight champions in the world. I didn't have anybody to guide me. I didn't trust anybody. I didn't believe in myself. It was tough. If I could be 25 again...'

'I was into Karate and the martial arts and in the early to mid 70’s, what they’d do is have this karate vs. boxing stuff going on and the karate guys would just get murdered. I mean, one round knock out, coma, death, everything. They were just getting beat to death. It was horrible. They set me up with a guy who was a Golden Gloves champion and a kick boxer, ninja, deadly guy too.
So they thought he was the next big time life taker and we got together and things didn’t turn out quite like they thought. As a matter of fact, he laid down on the floor real still for a while. They said, 'Why don’t you be a boxer? Learn to keep your feet on the ground and punch people in the mouth and you can make millions of dollars and we’ll send you to Philadelphia and you can train in Joe Frazier’s gym and everything.' I’d never been to Philadelphia and it sounded like a good idea, so I went with it.'
