The 10 point must system did not exist at the time of this fight. There was an alternative point scoring system to denote KDs, created by the judges, but that only came into play pending even round scores. But that was, I believe, only implemented in Championship fights like this one.

To take it a touch further . . . Decision fights came about to appease the gamblers, who were a driving force of the game.
First off, bookmakers would take bets based on an agreed upon sport writer decision, later on based on an official (immediate) referee decision, to eventually judges count rounds, finally to judges counting points.
Unfortunately what started as an adjustment for gamblers became an end unto itself. Thus the nature of the game as it is today, counting punches.
This counting punches thing is so prevalent that posters here make ****** remarks, about how if the fight had ended in the 20th round, Johnson would have beaten Willard. But it didn't, the fight was scheduled for 45 rounds, mainly to avoid the need for the decision. It is a totaly irrelevant argument. So it's really a pointless point to make.
Trivia: What was the first fight to see the HW championship change hands on a decision?
What was the next time the HW Championship changed hands via a KO or TKO?
No fair looking it up. Pull it out your ass or let someone else try.Last edited by Willie Pep 229; 03-25-2024, 11:13 AM.Comment

Hence Vegas ultimately took over the big boxing venues until being outbid by the Saudis. Not sure what the return$ are for the Saudis, but they got so much $$$ that it don't matter as they look to perhaps reforming, ie modernizing the country.Comment

Louis was a killer of a fighter. Incredible and his 25 defences would almost certainly have been 35?,40? In terms of fighters before him I can’t see any beating him at all. Johnson was crafty and outstanding in his day but he fought nobody like Louis. Dempsey is very overrated if you look at his record. Post Louis, Rocky would get cut up too badly, Liston maybe although the Ali fight’s definitely taint him. Frazier. You’d have to favour Louis. Ali I think would have been too fast and agile. Foreman maybe too powerful. Holmes is close. Tyson close too but Louis had more resolve. Holy close. Lennox likely beats him as do the k brothers. That’s about it I think.Comment

In what way should anybody favor Louis over frazier? When frazier was way more advanced even here at this very easy stage than the whole era louis fought inLast edited by Ascended; 03-25-2024, 01:15 PM.Comment

I can put many more guys who were way more advanced than the whole novice-like era Joe fought in and in no way does anybody Joe fought or himself look like they would land even 10 shots vs any of the guys I postedComment
