He should and fight Jesse Vargas for the WBA 140lbs "Regular" championship. And Costa Rica just scored, wow! They're legit. Mexico imploded. lol Back to boxing.
Nonito Donaire vs. Vasyl Lomachenko coming soon. HBO can make a 126lbs tournament of champions since they are all Top Rank except Gonzalez who isn't with Golden Boy or Haymon.
I think Shawn Porter vs. Kell Brook will end up being the co-feature for the Mayweather card. I believe Floyd is leaning toward Thurman which is why the 154 & 147 belts will be on the line.
Floyd Mayweather vs. Keith Thurman
Shawn Porter vs. Kell Brook
John Molina vs. Nihito Arakawa
Chad Dawson vs. Andrzej Fonfara
That would be a hell of a card on September 13th.
Chad might have to make a move to Cruiserweight, but once he gets proper training in and gets the money he's looking for to get in shape, he'll do it and get KTFO. I was a huge fan of his but I don't think he takes the sport or business of boxing seriously.
I suspect he'l fight Rubio at MSG on HBO World Championship Boxing to get him out of the way and will still get a nice payday. You could put James Kirkland vs. Joshua Clottey as the co-feature.
I think it'll be crazy if Mayweather & Cotto decide to have a rematch and cut-out Golden Boy & Top Rank using Haymon's stable that are free agents to fill out the card with Mayweather Promotions guys on the undercard to pay for Cotto's high purse he would need to collect to take the fight.
Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto II
Carlos Molina vs. Ishe Smith II
John Molina vs. Mickey Bey II
J'Leon Love vs. Gabriel Rosado II
The undercard is clearly *****, but reality would have to set in that Cotto would want a purse ranging from $10 to $15 million to take the fight right now when he can take on the likes of Canelo, GGG & possibly Chavez, Jr. Those bring good money and he could win those fights. But dethroning the P4P king would always be interesting and they could fight at the 160lbs limit since neither of them would need to hit that mark.
He's not going to retire. I'm positive he'll have at least a farewell fight. I suspect that he fights two more times in 2015 and calls it a career, the paydays will be there for him against some names. I can't see him walking away yet.
^LOL that made me laugh. It's clear that Canelo is Cotto's best choice. Probably has to put Marco Antonio Rubio on the undercard against someone like Martin Murray, Curtis Stevens, or Glen Tapia with a stipulation in the contract that they get the winner of Cotto/Canelo next.
Floyd......
If Cotto goes through Canelo, then I could see people clamoring for a rematch, if Cotto beats Canelo & GGG, the hype would be big for a rematch and for Floyd to become lineal Middleweight Champion.
Rubio will gladly take more step aside money, most likely gets billed as the co-feature. But Cotto vs. Canelo makes the most sense, I do think Canelo beats Lara and possibly KO's him. Cotto vs. Canelo breaks 1 million buys in my eyes.
I think Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is the perfect time to happen as neither one of them have a better option or bigger payday. If Pacquiao isn't tied to an HBO contract right now, with Schafer out of the picture it could get done for Showtime PPV, Manny has fought on there before.
Cotto vs. Canelo is clearly the biggest fight right now with out the top-two involved with Froch vs. Chavez, Jr. being 3rd. Golovkin has Daniel Geale first, then could look at taking Sam Soliman's title if that man is looking for a payday.
Sergio Martinez vs. Sam Soliman, the fight would get him right back into the Middleweight title picture and Soliman would get probably his biggest payday.
I think HBO Sports has a better production of boxing than Showtime Sports, but I like the fact both are invested in the sport. It allows ESPN, NBCSN, FOX Sports 1 & CBS Sports Network to get into the game and that's good visibility for the product in the future of the sport.
