This thing about the useless belt is there because there are sanctioning bodies doing business to give prestige to the fight...prestige which the promoters would use to sell the fight to casual fans. We cannot blame WBC if they are trying to do business for this fight by offering an obscure belt...they would make money if the promoters bites.
To me these sanctioning bodies belt has the same value as Spacey's belt... but if the promoter can use it to hype the fight to the casual fans and boost PPV sales I see nothing wrong in that strategy... its just business.
WBO welterweight belt will be on the line if Pac or Arum is willing to pay for it and regardless of what Cotto wants... The only reason to prevent WBO from putting the welter weight belt on the line is if the fight will be held below 140 or above 147.

Cotto is happy to fight at catchweight, and his fans are happy if he's happy. He just doesn't think, on principle, that a world title should be on the line if a lower limit than the Welterweight limit is specified in the contract because that would be a bullshit title. And many neutrals agree with him, and some Pacquiao fans agree with him - it's not just Cotto fans.
IMO he's making a stand for the integrity of boxing as a sport, and should be applauded for doing so by anyone who loves boxing.
At the time of Henry Armstrong where the weigh-in is at the day of the fight, this Paquiao vs Cotto match will be between a welterweight and a middleweight.
If the belt is very much important to Cotto and if he thinks he cannot win at the agreed weight of 145 lbs he can come to the fight at 147 lbs... its his choice.... but he will have to pay 1 million dollars for every pound in excess of 145 lbs.

In Armstrong's time the weigh in is at the day of the fight... it would embarassing for Cotto if we apply it today since he will outweigh Pac by 10 to 15 lbs... catchweight my a$$!!! At the day of the fight it will be a battle between a welterweight and middleweight if the fight happens in Armstrong time.

Before these claims were made public I was skeptical of Pacquiao. Performance enhancing drugs will always be ahead of the curve as far as testing goes. Between his head size and his ability to keep or increase his speed and power moving up from 106...it's suspect for sure.

Since Cotto is a champion and Paquiao is the no 1 contender WBO will not allow this to happen as a non-title fight... 3% of the purse of this superfight is a lot of money for WBO.
What happens to the belt is beyond Cotto's control anymore... he can dump his trinket...vacate it (to avoid paying for sanction fee, it will be vacant if he wins)...sell or pawn it... but WBO will still put it up for grab in this fight.
Arum will probably pay for the sanction fee (if Paquiao wins) just to sell the fight. The main hype here is that there is a possibility that Paquia will win a title in his 7th weigh devision which is 1st time in history...
I believe Cotto and Paquiao are warriors and this will be a good fight... but watching the BS board and judging from the post of supporters ...it appears that one fighter is hyping the fight by taking risk and bigger challenges...the other wise guy is doing it by bitching, moaning and crying about it.
The point is Cotto will have to decide about that. He has money to pay competent lawyers, advisers and consultants. They have already agreed to fight at 145 lb and WBO belt will be on the line regardless of what Cotto wants. Same day weigh-ins were abolished for medical reasons, to protect the health of boxers, because boxers were thought to be at serious risk of brain injury due to not being able to rehydrate properly. The rules were changed for the whole of boxing, not just for one fight, and not just in order to give an advantage to one fighter. That's very different to trying to change the rules for one fight, just so Pac can say he won a title in seven weight classes.
I'm stating the difference of the time of Henry Armstrong and now... I'm not trying to change the rules... just stating the facts...at the top the ring during the fight Paquia will be weighing around 147 lb and Cotto around 160 lb and I think this will be a good fight.
