I wish he had beaten Matthysse last night; then I could support his recaptured confidence.
Reality is, he's still at high risk of being KTFO by any decent technical fighter with pop.
What other territorys do the u.s.a have? Hawaii is one isn't it?Hawai'i is an official state. US protectorates include the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
I'm looking for Zab to give Khan a stiff test. I think Pernell Whitaker's defensive influence will help in mitigating that front runner tendency that's plagued Zab in his younger days. Zab is probably the slickest fighter with pop that Khan has faced. Khan better not sleep on Zab.
I'm fully confident that Vitali-Adamek will have more action than Wladimir-Haye.
Sauerland is delusional if he thinks Wladimir-Haye rematch is a PPV event again.
Disgusting
Why doesn't the press (including reporters who for for this site) invite the two judges to justify their scores? If they were under that type of scrutiny, it would make it a lot harder for business interests to buy them off.
Can't blame Rios for the backroom deals though. But I'm real curious to know what he thinks of the decision. A true warrior, a man of integrity, admits defeat when he gets his arse handed to him by a better fighter.
All the deals by promoters and broadcasters make it tough enough to secure exciting, competitive fights. i.e. the best fighting the best. Catch weights further destroy chances of getting the fights fans want (one more negotiating point to screw things up).
I also want to see same-evening weigh-ins. Every athlete would then have to fight at his natural weight (or very, very close to it). This might mean Pac would never fight Cotto. No loss. Cotto can fight PWill. Pac can fight Ortiz.
While I'm at it, I really miss 15 round championship fights.
Kirkland is fun to watch, exciting; good for the sport. Physically, he's a gifted athlete, a raw talent.
For the long term, better defense will serve him more than training to take punches.
He needs to become a more complete fighter. Too many times I saw Kirkland allowing Julio to turn him and move away from the ropes. And Julio's footwork is not his strength.
I don't think Julio is accustomed to moving so much. He needs to plant and sit down on his punches to hurt people.
Paul Williams can hurt you anytime, moving or stationary. He would school the current Kirkland, just like (get ready for it!) how Joe schooled Lacy. :p (I'm not a Calzaghe fan).
Floyd sleeps with the lights on when he hears the name Gennady. Think about the ballz Leonard had to come off a 5 year retirement with no tune up fight, to step in with Marvin Hagler. Despite who you think won, that took massive size nutz to do that! Now imagine Floyd stepping in with Gennady while Floyd is active, no retirement.... There's no way in hell Floyd would climb in the ring with Gennady!!!! For no amount of money!!! Floyd is afraid to climb in with Manny Pacquiao who is smaller than Floyd, let alone go fight Gennady wearing any kind of glove Floyd might demand; maybe even bedroom pillows. It doesn't matter, Floyd never agrees to fight for Gennady's title.Yeah, you on it. Leonard's career was carefully crafted. But the sheer audacity of the Hagler fight; going toe to toe against Duran and subsequently outclassing him in the No Mass rematch; and his late stoppage of Tommy in a fight he was losing; these put him in the ATG class.
If Floyd, Andre or Gennady make their mark with a similar resume of history-making fights, they will be accorded the same admiration.
Golovkin beat Dirrell before, but not sparked.Thanks. I just checked box-rec and, indeed, he beat Dirrell as an amateur. If he can out-point a boxer, then he's better in my eyes.
I see GGG as a bigger Tsyzu with great leverage in his punches; but not nearly technically polished. Konstantin was a beast.
Solid victory for Nonito. He scored far more telling blows. Mathebula wasn't busy enough and didn't have the pop to get Donaire's respect.
But the judging, damn, WTF??
There's a 122 belt around Rigo's waist and I noticed Nonito is willing to "unify" without it before moving up to 126. Lame.
I don't mind the crap coming out of the Mayweather camp because Roger and Floyd Sr are experts, no matter their personal lives.
The homophobia is just sad.
My entire point is that Floyd is not utilizing his supreme talent to the max. He earns so much without having to challenge himself. He sets a poor example to upcoming "stars" who want to model his success. e.g. Broner.
I also think he never would've gotten in Hagler's face. He won't even consider Martinez. He just will not take big risks in order to win big. That's not the MO of an ATG. I realize that's a harsh assessment. But I can understand why Duran said what he said (even though he still sounds like a hater).
Man, Arum can be full of it sometimes. My understanding is that Floyd walked away from the 2nd fight because the terms were crap.
Of course he's just baiting the Mayweather camp. Maybe they'll respond soon and clarify things.
Incredible, jaw-dropping KO!
Martinez may be slick but he's got pop too. He's been screwed by questionable judging in the US so I'm glad he got the KO this time. Fighter of the year for sure.
I'd like to see Paul work on his defense. And he needs a killer Hearns jab to leverage his height and reach. I don't know if he can do that with his current trainer though. I hope he's OK.
The reality here is that Canelo has just managed to beat his first legit JMW (Trout) and got himself a decent passing grade. And now he's matched against the best fighter of this generation, maybe the best in the last couple. Canelo is not an elite fighter. In September, he's going to be embarrassed. Floyd will take him to School. This fight is purely about business, because remove Canelo's cash cow status, and the core question becomes: does the current Canelo best represent the fighter to unseat Floyd? I feel most honest BOXING fans will respond, NOPE.
Boxing scene hits a new low and becomes more of a joke with this waste of what they call an articleFor real. Editors, please refrain from publishing this tabloid shyt.
@S.G. - what I've seen is Hatton being more adept at controlling distance with footwork; bridging the gap by using a jab along with head movement; maybe being more efficient with his punches overall.
I agree he hasn't look overwhelming since his loss to PBF but that doesn't mean that his skills haven't improved.
Freddie Roach's trash talk is just that. Trash talk. There's no way he's underestimating Ricky's improved boxing skills. This is no longer the mauler who comes at you with his head down and arms swinging.
Why would you be flabbergated? They thought a shot DLH and a limited Hatton could beat Pac.Despite DLH's performance against Steve Forbes, I still felt he could beat Pac because he had the size advantage (or so I assumed when the fight was announced) and enough skills to offset Manny's aggressiveness. I was also leaning towards Hatton to overpower Manny over the long stretch.
But I think it's a mistake to project these Pac victories as an indicator of how well he handles bigger men. Unlike DLH and Hatton, Cotto is a prime fighter despite his loss to Margarito.
I don't see a huge speed advantage for Manny. Nor do I see Cotto being turned in the middle of the ring, getting flustered. He's got solid boxing skills himself. It may take a few rounds, but he'll start timing Manny. Then it's game over.
Like I said, I'd be surprised if Manny survives 12 rounds. Big props if he does. In any case, I'm really looking forward to an exciting fight!
Jean Pascal a fighter being trained by Memo is undergoing random WADA testing. What more do you want them to do?If Pascal's next fight is to be held in Montreal, then "them" is the Quebec ministry of sports and culture (or a sport-specific commission, whatever) not the promoters. Tell camp Pascal that he's not allowed to fight anywhere in the province so long as he hires a known PED-trainer to prepare for his fight.
This is what's frustrating about pro boxing: a total lack of transparency in regards to matchmaking. PWilliams has to campaign at 3 weight classes because nobody within that deep group wants to step in the ring with him? Pathetic.
I respect Shane a lot but if he's going to claim he's the best after obliterating Margie then he's obligated to take on challenges issued by fighters considered top threats in their weight class. Floyd's not interested. Little Manny and his catch weights, screw that. But call Goosen Promotions and a contract will be drawn and signed in a heartbeat.
I understand that big bucks for the least risk is smart, business-wise, but these so-called champions can't forget that ultimately boxing fans get behind (i.e. pay to see) athletes who accept challenges that we deem exciting.
My jaws dropped when Ortiz told Max Kellerman that he's young and doesn't deserve to be beaten up like that; that he'd rather quit than go out on his shield; and that he didn't want to take further risks so he'd have his faculties when he got older.
Ortiz lost fans tonight. I wonder what Oscar said to him after the fight.
As long as you apply that to all boxers. Straight or gay.
Or, just dont read it. I dont read half the articles published here because they dont interest me.Right. Shyt is shyt, straight or gay.
I always have the option to skip articles, true. But including this type of crap draws hits from those who typically have little substance to offer to the rest of the readership.
