BoxingScene recently reported that Andre Ward is looking to land a big fight with Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez Jr as he’s trying to get the biggest and best names in the ring. Ward has been stellar as he’s dominated a talented Super Middleweight division but he’s on the search of more opponents to put on his ledger as he’s already defeated most of the top names.
While Ward is looking towards Chavez Jr’s direction, one name fight fans continuously bring up is Gennady Golovkin. Golovkin is coming off a monstrous knockout victory over Nobuhiro Ishida this past Saturday night as he knocked his Japanese opponent out cold in the 3rd round of their bout.
Golovkin has become boxing’s latest “boogie man” as he’s considered a dangerous opponent and one nobody is in a rush to get in the ring with. While Golovkin currently fights a Middleweight, he has made it very clear he would be willing to fight as high as 168lbs where Ward currently campaigns.
When BoxingScene caught up with Ward, he was asked about his thoughts on Golovkin and a possible clash with him.
“I think with Golovkin he's strong and he can hit hard. But it’s tough to know what any fighter has if he hasn't done it against the best. So if you do that against world champions then that's a situation where you can take your hat off and say 'yeah, he is the puncher that they say he is'. But right now he's doing what he has to do in staying busy and staying out there. I think down the road if that fight makes sense then why not” said Ward.
While Ward is looking for a big name fight to cross him completely over into the mainstream, he also has an option in the tough and feared GGG. While this fight may not happen right away, you can’t help but feel like Golovkin could end up being one of Ward’s biggest and toughest challenges if he continues his winning ways.
