Its a race thing, look at the klitschos, no one in their country is harping about david haye knocking either of them out.
MAYWEATHER TOLD YA'LL ONCE, IF HE WAS WHITE, HE WOLD BE SECOND ONLY TO GOD.
This would make some kind of sense if America didn't support the following:
Roy Jones Jr.
Mike Tyson
Sugar Ray Leonard
George Foreman
Evander Holyfield
Marvin Hagler
Tommy Hearns
Manny Pacquiao
Oscar De La Hoya
Julio Cesar Chavez
Roberto Duran
Tito Trinidad
James Toney
Kobe Bryant
Michael Jordan
Magic Johnson
Lebron James
Emmit Smith
Adrien Peterson
Deon Sanders
Allen Iverson
Shaq
And that's just naming a few NON White folks that seemed to be pretty well embraced even after a few of them had some things happen in their personal lives that would destroy many careers.
If the Klitschko brothers were black and from America they would be far more popular but they still wouldn't be at a Tyson/Holyfield level because they're not all that entertaining. So does this mean America is more racist against Ukrainians than black people? It's all so convoluted.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of racist white people out there that hate Floyd because he's a black guy with a big mouth but that's a small percentage compared to how many people simply don't find him very entertaining inside the ring.
Oh and for the record, if you don't think Mike Tyson, Michael Jordon, Sugar Ray Leonard or a few of those other guys were hailed by America as "second only to god" in their day you must be 15 years old. Hell, Lebron is pretty much at that point right now. You should see the way people react when someone says Durant might end up better than him on message boards.
Americans support Americans they like or find entertaining. NOT just any American. Floyd positioned himself as the Villain and he's gonna act surprised that people don't like him? Come on, man!
Fact is that for the most part Americans want to see Americans do well. It's why the heavyweight division is shit right now and very talented foreigners in the NBA will never reach Kobe, Lebron, Iverson, Shaq levels... ever. Manny crossed over. It's a very rare situation.
You know what's even more rare? That a talent like Floyd can be so grating and involved in so many boring fights that Americans reject him. All he cares about is money anyway so why's he worried about support at this stage in the game?
(For the record, I don't think he was boring the other night. He was ****ing fantastic for the first time in years and I appreciate that he finally gave the public something to be impressed about in his welterweight career.)
TimothyQ your acting like people knew tyson holyfield was gonna involve some biting. People went into that fight thinking tyson would come through on hiw words and "bully" holyfield the second time around. Or at least knock him down once or twice.
Holyfield more or less dominated (and then knocked out) Tyson in the first fight. Popular consensus after the first fight (pre fight 2 hype) was that Tyson simply couldn't stand in there against someone that fought back. I'm not saying the fight was big because of the bite, I'm saying it was big because of the spectacle... not the actual fight that was expected to occur in the ring.
This is why Bowe/Holyfield 2 was bigger in my eyes... people weren't just expecting a spectacle, they were looking forward to a great fight... they ended up getting both.
Bowe Vs. Holyfield 2
Shocked no one mentioned it yet!
The Tyson/Holyfield fights were big too but for different (less boxing related) reasons. The first one, people figured Holyfield was washed up and it was big for the Tyson circus... the second one was big but not because people thought it would be an epic fight. Bowe Vs. Holyfield 2 was huge because it was the best heavyweights getting back in the ring a year after they had and all time classic fight.
as ariza stated last week, manny has no idea what's in his body.....ariza mixes up special "blends" and pac just takes them in trust....the fact that he threatened to sue sr. then, really means nothing.....as far as manny knows, he's clean.....
Well the skeptic would say that Ariza is saying this preemptively in anticipation of a failed drug test so Manny isn't perceived as the cheater... Just sayin...
And again, as a big fan of Manny's I'll repost this to all the Manny lovers out there:
Lets be real here. Would any of you **** a girl that absolutely refuses to be tested beforehand? How about if you offer her 30 million dollars to take the test and she refuses... would you **** her then? A stern refusal is... ready for it? FISHY.
Lets be real here. Would any of you **** a girl that absolutely refuses to be tested beforehand? How about if you offer her 30 million dollars to take the test and she refuses... would you **** her then? A stern refusal is... ready for it? FISHY.
where did you you get this info?
I read "Game of Shadows" ... it's great at describing how athletes cheat tests. I'm not accusing, I just think there is nothing wrong with drug tests and anyone that's wary of them seems guilty to me. I'll take a drug test tomorrow for a job if I want it. I'm not worried about anything at all nor do I have reason to be. Again... I'm a HUGE Manny fan. I'm disappointed that he's refusing this and hoping it's just a promotional ploy.
Well, I am not a Floyd fan (based on his in ring performance NOT his attitude, which I think is great) but I have to admit, as a Manny backer it's very telling if he refuses to have his blood drawn. If you have nothing to hide you do it. He's a boxer, he gets punched in the face and cut for a living but he's afraid of a needle? Not buying it for a second. Hopefully this is just a ploy to keep the fight at the forefront of sports news with 3 months to go.
EDIT: and for the record, you can STOP your 'roid cycle a couple weeks BEFORE the fight and still utilize the benefits of the juice while having a "clean" test after the fight. What you gain from cheating doesn't just go away in a week or two but the blood is "normal" by then.
I could never deny how amazing Roy Jones Jr. was in his prime. I don't think I've ever seen anything close to what he displayed in the ring back then. I'm not a fan of his but I'm in awe of him as a fan of boxing. He's just been such a dick in his twilight years that he's turned off a lot of the public. Couple that with his more frequent failures in the last 5-7 years (terrible in the terrible Matrix 2, terrible rap career, terrible announcer, terrible losses by KO) and you get a public that forgets how special he was at one point.
Mayweather is a different beast all together. He's just an unlikable dude (by his own design, I'm sure the guy is quite affable when the cameras are off). Many of us fans are disappointed by how he (VERY safely) has steered his career. For myself, I look at him with disappointment because I see his talent yet, I don't see him exploit it or let it elevate him to something greater. The JMM fight was an example of a guy that was collecting a paycheck. He could have "gone for it" at any point and wowed the fans in a similar way that Roy Jones used to do but he safely let it play out until it went to the cards. You can still be entertaining while you dominate. See: 90's Roy Jones Jr, 80's Tyson et al. Mayweather can't be bothered. Anyone shelling out $50 for his fights has a legitimate gripe.
It's not that Mayweather isn't great, he's just disappointing to those of us that recognize how much greater and more interesting he could be IN the ring.
(I understand he's 40-0. If you're bringing that up, you're missing the essence of my post. Of course, I don't expect many of you racist, homophobic mongoloids to understand it anyway.)
You said it, NewBreed. Ortiz plays the nice guy part pretty well but he is kind of scumbag in the ring. Those fouls he commits have no place in boxing.
Anybody notice was a terrible job Lopez's corner was doing on his swelling? They seemed like they were going out of their way to completely ignore his left eye. Absolutely terrible corner. He could have come out of that fight looking a lot better if they did their goddamn jobs on his eye.
Well at first I thought Manny seemed pretty guilty but it looks like Goldenboy is actually trying to sabotage the whole thing. The problem seems to be that USADA will only do RANDOM testing which is fine but that means they can't guarantee there won't be a blood test the day before, or ON the day of the fight. This is the hangup. Manny and his people are agreeing to have blood tests and urine tests but need to be sure they won't have blood taken close to or ON fight day so they want the folks that run the NFL/MLB's testing. Apparently they can make concessions that there will be no blood drawn within a few days of the fight.
Basically, Goldenboy is trying to make Manny look like a cheat and refuses to compromise. Looks like Floyd never wanted the fight. Not surprising.
Floyd ducks another fighter... there's a shock. Oh well, Manny is just gonna keep entertaining and Floyd will keep outpointing guys that are smaller than him. What a waste.
Ummm... he hit him right in the ear and knocked his equilibrium to hell. That's why his legs went to shit and he couldn't get his balance set or throw any punches. It had nothing to do with a concussive blow that rung his bell so you can forget that "he was hit in the back of the head" nonsense.
ahh..so being a smart fighter to make the opponent tire themselves for the KO isnt great(Ali's win over Foreman wasnt great whatsoever I guess!)
and KOing a fighter faster is (Tyson must be the best there ever is!)
Well, now lets be realistic here. Floyd wasn't waiting to tire him out, he was getting his timing down. You could watch him figuring it out especially after a lackluster first 2 rounds and into the later rounds when he was landing perfect counters. That's a knock on his training (yet props to instinct and in ring smarts) because he doesn't go into a fight with a strategy. Manny went in the ring against Hatton knowing exactly what he needed to do to blow him up. That's the difference between a prepared fighter and a fighter going on instinct. Both wins were great and both fighters are great. Its why we want the fight so bad.
That "0" is the first thing he goes to when he talks about how great he is (which is, ummmm... quite often).
Further proof that all of his mouthing off is just schtick. Stop talking and give me an exciting fight for the first time in half a decade!
The only outcome of this fight that would surprise me is Floyd knocking Shane out. I can't see that happening at all. I think Mosley is gonna win but if he loses it's going to be on points.
Floyd hasn't even hurt a true 147 yet has he? And it's not like Mosley has a week chin or anything...
suuure..we'll go with your version!...its not like before they fought Floyd mentioned that Hatton tires easy..or that he likes to break down his opponents..okay..lol
A: Watch the fight again. It's pretty clear he didn't have the timing and was whiffing a lot for the first few rounds... and less and less as the fight went on. A guy doesn't miss on purpose.
B: Floyd has stated very clearly that he doesn't believe in strategy before a fight and that he breaks down a fighter IN THE RING.
That's not my version, that's Floyd's version... and you know... evidence.
Haye's gotta steer clear. If he takes this fight he's just going to get his ass beat and ruin his future box office. He's better off staying away, coming up with excuses and feasting on guys that can't hang. He wouldn't be the first to make the right business decision and reap the rewards of "what if!?"
Generally I don't condone this but he's really got no chance anyway. He's not denying us a good fight ducking these guys so no big deal. Pad the wallet and keep your brain working.
mayweather called out damn near everyone. dont put it on mayweather that its his fault when bob arums is the snake that prevented the fights may was asking for
I find it interesting that you brought this up when I never mentioned him ducking anyone. I specifically mentioned that he could be way more exciting to watch and simply hasn't been... seemingly by choice. If you're going to step in the ring with an old blown up JMM that's fine but you better knock him out. If you're gonna fight an aging De La Hoya while you're in your prime (and claiming you're the GOAT) you better knock him out.
It's one thing to take bullshit fights because (allegedly) no one wants to fight you, but you gotta blow up those guys in the process. Letting lesser guys take you the distance is never good for the legacy.
Nice to see someone actually cares about the health of these guys. Taylor has no business carrying on. he's proved that he can't fight a full 12 anymore. Regardless of chin, recent knockouts, brainscans... if you can't go 12 you have no business being in the ring. Bad for your health, bad for the sport... just bad bad bad.
Wow, white people love to deny the marketing advantage the color of their skin gives them. Jason Sehorn, Mike Alstott, BABY JOE MESI... of course Khan would be more universally embraced by a predominately white country if he were white! That's not to say it is impossible for him to be a superstar in England because he's not... it'll just be a little harder. White folks love seeing other white folks succeed in minority dominated sports. It's very easy for an above average white athlete to reach superstar status (I'm looking at you Beckham!) whereas most minority superstars need to be legitimately "great". It's not right... it's total bullshit but that's a fact and the only people that seem to deny it are white people. I find it pretty funny.
Just an unbiased observation from a white American with eyes.
I hope Roy fights for another 20 years. Anything to keep him away from the announcing table. I didn't think it could get any worse than Foreman but he was terrible. I've never heard an announcer so blinded by bias as Roy.
That said, I've also never seen a guy as talented as Roy in the old days. He never learned any "veteran tricks" or techniques, he was never a student of the game, he never had a chin... he got to where he got on natural gifts alone. Never seen a guy so fast.
Good luck out there Roy
lol are the such things as "grown up" forums that are free?
I've been spoiled by the movie forum over at CHUD.com ... they really moderate it and keep it relevant. I guess I'm just dreaming with boxing though.
This says about as much as you need to know about Manny and Floyd...
So, if and when the biggest fight in the world falls apart these guys need to go on and fight someone else. Manny chooses to fight a guy that will come into the fight at 170lbs and Floyd chooses a guy that has 5 KO's in 30 fights. Yup, everything is as it should be here.
At least when Manny was going to fight Paulie you could make a case that he was preparing for Floyd by taking on a speedy defensive fighter. Floyd isn't preparing for anyone, he's just taking another fight where he can't get hurt. Gutless.
Well if we're gonna derail and get into predicting the fight I'm just gonna say Mosley's experience against much better competition over the years may well give him a pretty significant advantage.
Being that Mosley is the toughest fight Floyd has had in years (by a very large margin) he could get shocked in there through sheer lack of experience against that level of fighter. We see that happen to a lot of guys in the sport.
What's with all this "I don't know if there is enough time to promote a fight of this magnitude..." nonsense? First of all, it's already huge and everyone wants to see it. Second, all this 'roids stuff hasn't been all over the sports headlines for weeks already? They haven't set up the inevitable "This is personal" storyline already? They have 3 ****ing months to milk this shit. Whoever decided 6 months was needed to properly promote a show was obviously a dipshit that wanted to keep belts as long as possible.
I think what's lost in the shuffle here is that for the first time Floyd is admitting he's worried about losing. Right now there isn't a shred of proof that Manny is on anything, so Floyd is saying "This guy can't be this good, can he? He's gotta be on something, I don't want to risk my perfect record."
He's not only admitting that he has doubts that he can beat Manny but he's also admitting that a flyweight on steroids might be able to beat him. We all know from that great article the other day that Manny has been at this weight (and drained himself out to make smaller weights) for about 4 years now but if Floyd is going to make accusations based on Manny's rise in weights he's admitting that a flyweight on 'roids can beat him.
Mark it on calender, Floyd thinks he could lose and since Manny has never failed a drug test, he's admitting it about clean fighter. Before, I thought this was a really even fight and may have actually given the edge to Floyd but now that even Floyd is expressing doubt, I'm thinking Manny has an advantage.
I love how you children on these boards have no idea how negotiations work. Usually BOTH sides need to make concessions and meet somewhere in the middle. Floyd absolutely refused to budge on the ONLY sticking point. He didn't want this fight and you Pretty Boy fans are just gonna stick by the tired "Why won't Manny just take the test?" nonsense. It's all been explained and none of you bother listening. You're in denial, Floyd is a coward.
Not in denial? What do you call refusing to believe that bruising and weakness can radiate from the inside of the elbow out to the lower bicep and upper forearm if blood is drawn too close to fight day? Something that just happened to a friend of mine right before Christmas actually. He dubbed his arm "dead" and he's not a Manny or Floyd fan... he's not even a boxing fan. He just happened to bitch about it one day.
Wouldn't that be great if the fight was delayed or cancelled because of something so stupid and uh... preventable?
Next the Floyd fans ignore the fact that Manny went above and beyond the testing when he agreed to not one but THREE tests. Do you know why you make such a large concession? BECAUSE YOU WANT THE ****ING FIGHT. He has no reason at all to even entertain ANY blood demands but he did anyway.
THEN Floyd fans will ignore that only Manny's side has budged at all in negotiations regarding those same tests when he changed the window from 30 to 24 days before the fight. Why did he change that window? BECAUSE HE WANTED THE ****ING FIGHT.
Now that the fight is over Manny is going to go UP in weight and fight a guy that might come in at 170lbs while Floyd is going to fight a guy at 147lbs that has 5 KO's in 30 fights. Why? Because Manny has balls and Floyd is a coward that only cares to pad his joke of an undefeated record.
Just remember; Floyd is the only superstar out there that can't seem to make any of the fights he ALLEGEDLY wants (Margarito, Mosley, Manny). I know, it's kind of a waste bringing logic to these forums since half of the posters are ****ing retarded but I wanted to bring some grown up talk to the table.
EDIT: I should apologize to those of you out there that aren't idiots or blinded by your fan support (Pac fans are just as bad). I'm a boxing fan and I'm annoyed that we're being robbed here. Furthermore, I'm disappointed in these forums for being such a loud, stupid, name calling, large photoshopped picture posting mess. Does anyone know of a more grown up boxing forum? I care way more about the sport than I do about rooting for a guy with the help of silly photos.
This reminds me of when Roy Jones was a commentator on HBO and would be completely biased against a fighter because he picked one to win or he lost to one of them and no matter how bad things were going he'd keep making excuses and saying "he's setting a trap... you watch... he's doin' exactly what he wants to do" and meanwhile the dude's just getting his face bashed in. Now Roy is doing the same thing with a first round loss, just making it up as he goes along, refusing to admit he needs to hang them up. For such a great fighter he's really an unlikable douche.
