Check out this interview to get Eddie Hearn's (Froch's promoter) perspective on this potential fight. Also, I do believe Loeffler and K2 have pursued this match-up, but it looks like Hearn is not interested for the time being.
Some telling quotes from the interview:
"If you want to be critical of Golovkin you can break down his opponents and show they're not absolute elite level. That's not Golovkin's fault because you have to pay an absolute fortune to get anyone to fight him."
"There is not 10 million in the pot to tempt the likes of Cotto or Chavez to fight him, which is the sum they'd want for that kind of fight. It's definitely a career-threatening fight."
"Yes, Froch is financially comfortable, but that doesn't mean he'll get in the ring for less than he deserves, and that is a horrible, dangerous fight."
Can we please give Cotto some credit? He isn't a spring chick himself and has been in more wars than Mayweather. Mayweather clearly won the fight and it is too premature to say what Floyd has or has not lost in terms of physical ability. It could just be that Cotto is the best fighter Floyd has faced in years and/or a combination of that along with some decline in his ability. Also, it could be that Floyd fought injured as he said.
I also believe Floyd has the boxing smarts to compensate for some of his lost athleticism.
Martinez at any weight as long as he gives Martinez the requested amount of time to lose weight in a healthy manner if it is at 154 or below (152 at the absolute lowest, but that would probably end up terrible).
Austin Trout???lmfao why??
He has proven more at 154 than Canelo has as of yet. The only reason a Canelo fight happens is because he has been built up by GBP.
The only thing I know for sure is that Floyd will fight Guerrero on May 4th and fight again in September. Nobody from Golden Boy or team Mayweather has yet said his September opponent will be Canelo so that is just an assumption not a fact. I don't think he will fight Canelo in September but that is the fight I would like the most. When Team Mayweather say they will fight Canelo I will believe it and not before then. I voted for Marquez to get another shot at Floyd. The first fight was a long time ago and things have changed. Floyd seems to be slipping from the Cotto fight and Marquez seem much better at a higher weight than he was against Floyd.
Maybe he won't, but it does look like it is being set up.
what would he prove by fighting a 38 year old mw at 154??the fight would mean nothing..fight at 160 or there is no point...the lineal title is the only reason for this fight to happen man..other than that it is pointless and leaves to many excuses out there
It would prove more to me than fighting Canelo as of now. I'd like it more than something like a Devon Alexander fight at 147 as well.
Martinez says he can make 154 and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as long as he is given the amount of time he asks for to try to lose the weight in a healthy manner. That is my position, but you are welcome to disagree.
I'm sure there are some who wouldn't like the fight at the weight and others like myself who would be fine with it, so long as Martinez is given time.
If Martinez wins at 160 wouldn't the excuse just be Floyd is too small and is old? I realize Martinez is old too, but many Floyd fans would likely say he was fighting at his natural weight and was much bigger. Floyd would still be at a size disadvantage with Sergio at 154, but it also gives Floyd an advantage in that Martinez may have some difficulty making weight. I think that is a fair trade-off.
So why bring that fight up like he was beating Robinson or like he stopped him??skill was winning that fight
True it was there. Size can make a difference in some fights, but I shouldn't have brought it up there. That is actually more of a fight that shows size should not necessarily be used as an excuse for one top fighter to avoid another.
No 1 that is it,he said he will retire at 37
He won't be 38 until February 2015, so he could still fight in 2014 if that is what he is planning.
He has also said he would fight five more times after the Cotto fight, so who knows what he will do. 50 Cent says he has no income outside of his boxing fights and Floyd spends the money he earns very fast, so that could also factor into how many more times he fights.
Floyd would come in at 152-155 for the Martinez fight, size doesnt win fights skills do
That is not completely true. Operating under that logic Joey Maxim must have been a more skilled fighter than Sugar Ray Robinson.
My dream would be for them to fight each other and retire on the same night, but they just aren't on the same path. Only way they meet in the ring is if Martinez goes down to 154 and beats Canelo first. I don't see Floyd taking the risk otherwise.
Martinez apparently only wants three more fights including the Murray bout, while Floyd seems open to fighting through 2014 and then retiring. They could fight in 2014 then.
I doubt Canelo fights Martinez anytime soon since he has yet to fight a live body at JMW, but stranger things have happened I suppose.
I know it may be difficult for Martinez to secure the fight, but I do think he is the most marketable opponent after Canelo.
I bet my life he won't fight in September. May, June, July, August, September. That's only four months apart from his next fight (May). You guys need to stop getting duped by this master deceiver. That's what he does when he's selling his next fight. "I'll fight five more times" and all that crap. His next fight is most likely his last.
I certainly expect him to fight at least two more times before retiring and it has been widely reported he wants to fight two times this year, but who really knows.
I do see him fighting Canelo at some point even though Canelo has yet to fight a live body since there is a lot of money in that fight.
before he fights either, it's past time he fight a slick, prime African-American. Trout is a golden boy fighter, why not? :D
That would likely be more challenging than fighting Canelo, so it's too bad it likely won't happen.
If Ortiz can come back strong, I'd like to see him get a rematch. By that time, Floyd will be a little older and the fight could be even more competitive.
Please no. That fight just isn't compelling. Ortiz would need to do tons of work to make that fight worth while.
He said he will retire when he turns 37 man
"Floyd Mayweather Jr., who has won titles in five divisions, remains at the top of his game at age 35. But he said he sees the end of his career coming -- at age 37.
"It's just the number that I chose," said Mayweather, who will challenge Miguel Cotto for his junior middleweight title on Saturday night at the MGM Grand. "I'm really not sure. Could be earlier, could be later, but that's just a reasonable number that I chose."
Mayweather has retired once before. Following his December 2007 knockout of Ricky Hatton, Mayweather retired before returning to dominate Juan Manuel Marquez in September 2009.
Mayweather will turn 37 in February 2014 and said he wants to fight regularly -- meaning probably twice a year -- through that year.
"Of course, I want to give you guys more than just a few more fights," Mayweather said. "I want to -- this fight plus five more if I can."

Looks like he could still be fighting in 2014 to me.
I forgot to mention Marquez. He looks more comfortable at 147 now, but may very well retire. If he does not it looks like he is set up for another Pacquiao fight, so I don't how likely that is either. Could be more compelling than the last fight, but I don't think Marquez matches up well stylistically.
Funny how Martinez was beating the bigger man up in the pocket as well
When some Chavez fans say he just had to start the fight like he fought the 12th and then he would have won they show that they did not learn the lessons from the fight. It wasn't like Martinez was not getting hit. He was, but he was taking the punches and hitting Chavez with more in return. They clearly hurt Chavez and caused him to back up on a few different occasions. He also could not get off a lot since he fights flat-footed and Martinez' style is based on movement.
Chavez has to improve a lot especially if he plans to move up soon since his size advantage will shrink.
GGG is the heir to the MW crown
He has shown a great chin thus far in his pro career and in the amateurs, but I want to see it tested against another big puncher. I also would love to see how he would fare against a pure boxer that could take his shots fairly well. I like the guy though.
strangely enough the ring has him at #5
I think that is kind of ridiculous. I could maybe see someone putting him at No.10, but I think that is even a bit of a stretch. I could definitely see putting him in the top 20 or lower end of top 15.
He probably will be in the top 10 soon though. The only question will be is if he can take the power of bigger guys when he starts to move up since he has a size advantage over many of his opponents right now on fight night from what I can recall.
Something to consider, if Canelo actually fights Trout, he'll fail, and Floyd certainly won't fight Trout. Alexander is all risk, no reward. Bradley is very beatable for Floyd and is starving for a big money fight since he got nowhere from fighting Pac.
Bradley is with Top Rank though, so that may be hard to get done.
I'm going to go with Kid Chocolate the only question I still have is his chin.
He has potential, but he was outboxed by N'Jikam for most of that fight. What saved him was his power, but he could not finish him off, which is somewhat concerning when you knock down a guy six times.
I agree with this ^^^. He should hang them up after these next two fights. Nothing left to prove. Otherwise we'll see him losing to somebody like Danny Garcia in 2014 since he waited to long to leave the game.
Or he could fight another older fighter like Sergio Martinez, which could be something of a legacy fight for both.
naw 160 or no fight imo..the champion should be allowed to weigh in at the limit,if you think you are to small then stay in your lane
Martinez was at 157 for the Macklin fight, so it really isn't that big of a drop for him.
No Robinson was clearly winning that fight the heat stopped the fight not Joey Maxim....they even had to replace a ref due to the heat..come on man that is common knowledge
I know that is part of it, but Maxim was fighting through the same heat.
where did you get 38??he said 37..and i typed 37
If his last fight is in late 2014 then he will have retired when he is still 37. It isn't complicated.
Pretty much this. To get full credit, people would need see how Martinez looked at 154lbs first. He hasn't fought there since 2009 against Cintron (draw).
Floyd would still get credit for taking the fight right now regardless though, no one expects him to take it.
Or just the time Martinez has asked for to lose the weight in a healthy manner.
Martinez really beat Cintron in that fight (he knocked him out, but the ref let him fight after the count of 10 and then Martinez should have won in decision), but that is just a small aside.
Didn't Freddie have adamek winning and bj Flores said it could have been a draw so how is that a robbery?
I believe Freddie and BJ both had Cunningham winning the last round, which gave Cunnignham the fight for both. Flores would have had it 116-112 for Cunningham from my understanding.
