Didn't these two fight before? If I recall correctly it was a snooze fest that Shields cruised to victory in. I also thought these two were friends.
Oh well, anything to generate buzz for a non-buzzworthy fight.
I don't think this was staged for the sake of selling tickets, because the show has been doing very well at the box office. You're right that Shields and Crews-Dezurn have long been both friends and rivals dating back to their time in the amateurs, where they fought three times. They did also fight in what was the pro debut for both in late 2016. Given the lack of depth in the heavier weight classes in women's boxing, and Crews-Dezurn's status as a unified titleholder at super middleweight, I can understand why this match was made.

It wasn't that much of a brawl. They're just putting that for the clicks but it was still kinda trashy. Claressa is a narcissist and isn't that exciting to watch anymore.
Thank you for the comment. I was at the weigh-in in the front row and stand by my description of what happened behind the stage as "a short but ugly brawl," "a brief melee," etc.

Ismael Laguna is from Panama...maybe he had many fans in Puerto Rico but his home soil is Panama, a different country. He only fought one other bout in Puerto Rico.
Thank you! I've fixed this in the article.

I was at Téllez’s last fight. Was hoping he’d deliver, of course. Baraou was a little too much for him at this point in his career. I think Yoenis and his team might’ve made the mistake of looking past the more experienced fighter a little bit. But the Cuban is only 25, and is showing the right attitude: use this as a catalyst for growth. He has work to do, and it’s good he understand that now. Easy to fall in love with yourself when you’re getting past everyone you’ve faced easily. Téllez was lucky he saw the final bell; he was in trouble towards the end. That’s a wake-up call.
Username checks out =)
It's great to see that you're still on the BScene forums, btw.

It's Probably Mayorga's account, but no one at Twitter gives a f**k who he is so they aren't going to verify that lump of sh1t.
It's among what have been up to three fake Mayorga accounts going simultaneously.
I've heard this argument before. Except it was Gatti instead if Cintron.
I wouldn't necessarily expect Mayweather to do to Cintron what he did to Gatti, but I definitely wouldn't expect Cintron to do to Mayweather what he did to Matthysse.
No matter how much older Mayweather is now, there's a tremendous difference in speed, skill and technique.

And have you been up to Westminster to see any of Mark Tucker's fights?
Link or it didn't happen.
8. Two items from the same Atlanta Journal-Constitution article are quite hard to believe.
First:
“Holyfield said he plans to permanently retire from boxing at the end of 2009.”
Second:
“In the meantime, however, he said representatives of Lennox Lewis … had contacted him earlier this week about a possible fight.”
And it's a good article. If what at least one respected trainer says is true about this Thurman kid, then Ryan's article will introduce you to someone you could be hearing much more about in the future.
1) Lomachenko was AWESOME at the Games and could be a star in the U.S. Please turn pro Vasyl (I've heard he's not).
2) Senor Greisman, that is an impressive list you posted. I love Global Boxing even if I hate all the belts and sanc mobs.
Cliff,
Any man who's seen as many Eagle Kyowa fights as you have is a true global boxing fan.
Current titlists from former Soviet Union countries:
Heavyweight: V. Klitschko, W. Klitschko, Chagaev (champ in recess), Valuev
Light heavyweight: Diaconu (Romania, briefly in historical terms)
Super middleweight: Bute (ditto); Inkin
Middleweight: Abraham
Junior middleweight: Dzinziruk
Junior welterweight: Kotelnik
Junior bantamweight: Darchinyan
This was an unnecessary bait thread.
Anyone here anything about this? Here's the trailer. It looks well made. When's it coming out? Will it be in theaters?

Enjoyed the book. If you can find it, read it.
When I visited Canastota about 15 months ago, there was a section of a wall dedicated to great fights.
The International Boxing Hall of Fame isn't just the inductees - their plaques are but one section of the building.
And I can tell you there was at least one large Gatti-Ward photo in the building they use for memorabilia sales.
This may have been asked before but it is a mystery of life.
In a magic lamp that Jim Lampley rubs every three rounds. That's why Harold lets out that laugh whenever Jim asks him how he's scored the fight.
The first induction class was in 1990.
Foreman was inducted in 2003. Leonard was inducted in 1997. He fought Camacho that year, a few years before the induction but after his selection had been announced. It was for a minor sanctioning body title.
Fenech and Nelson did fight long after their inductions (Fenech was inducted in 2002, Nelson in 2004), but they didn't fight for a world title. They just fought each other last year.
On a side note that's really more of a shameless plug, you can read my article about Sadam Ali in THE RING magazine -- the June issue, the one with Manny Pacquiao on the cover.
Networks and casinos are running out of money on their 2009 budgets. The issue is that HBO doesn't have enough to pay for both Pavlik-Williams and Mosley-Berto, and I'm not sure if Clottey changes the money equation.
Budgets start anew come January.
Spina weighed in at 176.5, just above light heavyweight. Del Valle came in at 185, which was above the limit -- the limit was either 181 or 181 plus 2.
The IBO has Wladimir and Pacman on its current roster of champions.
That doesn't mean anything when you consider stuff like this:
In July, their welterweight championship fight featured their 27th ranked welterweight against their 57th ranked junior welterweight.
The undercard of that bout had a bantamweight championship between guys ranked 26th and 45th.
Most of their legitimate, top-ranked champions don't hold onto the belt long. It's not held in the same regard as the "big four."
But they wanted to play up the UK-US angle by havin the 3 face off against each other in the 1st rd.
Abraham is an Armenian who has made his home in Germany.
Kessler is Danish.
Froch is the only Brit.
How exclusive is something that has been written about on this Web site three times, on another Web site once, and then poached by other Web sites into seeming perpetuity?
You're totally wrong, Ward is suppose to fight Kessler then Taylor...
That's correct. What the thread starter is missing is that Ward and Kessler haven't had their first-round fights yet, while the other four fighters have.
Here are the match-ups for the second and third rounds of the group stage, per press release from Showtime:
GROUP STAGE 2
ANDRE DIRRELL vs. ARTHUR ABRAHAM
MIKKEL KESSLER vs. CARL FROCH
JERMAIN TAYLOR vs. ANDRE WARD
GROUP STAGE 3
ANDRE DIRRELL vs. ANDRE WARD
CARL FROCH vs. ARTHUR ABRAHAM
MIKKEL KESSLER vs. JERMAIN TAYLOR
