Those that follow boxing know Rafael Marquez is the real deal. He beat Too Sharp Johnson 2x , knocked Tim Austin out of the ring, and went up and made Vazquez' face look like Rocky Dennis from the movie Mask. He is well schooled with his defense but also a risk taker. All his fights are exciting and he has yet to be disappointing. On the other hand his brother JMM is too technical , too defensive and relies on the counter punch which can lead to boring fights. JMM had a chance to shine back in 99 but stunk out the joint against Norwood. He is one of the best in the world no doubt about it, but his style takes away from his marketability from fans who prefer aggresive and toe to toe action.(Morales,Barrera)
This really a no brainer for me. If the measuring stick is fights up to a common opponent which was Roy Jones jr, then Toney by a landslide. When Hopkins fought Jones he had no legit top level victories. In comparison Toney fought MCcallum 2x,Johnson,Nunn,Barkley,Sosa,PC Williams, and Littles. At 160 a prime and in shape Toney pounds an inexperienced Hopkins.
For me ,the fighter that i think is the best,is ODLH. I identify with him because he has been critized since the beginning for fighting for the US flag and being rejected by Mexico. He has always been true to his heritage and never denied it, as a matter fact he became a Mexican citizen. He has fought everyone and ducked no one regardless of the outcome. He has spent millions of his own hard owned money to build schools and paid for scholarships. He has assisted financially in the buildiing of a hospital as well as other charity work. The most important reason why he is the best for me , is that he represents for us born here in the US , and who reveres and has the upmost respect for our roots. Many Mexicans hate on him for being born in the US and speaking english, but he has transcended that and made many Mexicans aware of the fact that he Is to be respected. Personally, he has bridged the gap between Mexicans born in the US and those born in Mexico,in that by not denying his roots and being a positive role model for many , he has in effect changed the minds of many in the Mexican community that never would have accepted him as one of their own. He makes me proud to be Mexican, born in the US , and never denying who he is.
Espn Classic is wack! The only reason why I'm paying for that that channel is for the boxing and they can't even do that right. Espn 2 fights are not classics. The voice over commentary takes away from the original theme of the fight and takes away from the emotion and excitement of a fight. They were scheduled to show this week Vargas vs Campas,Mayorga vs Trinidad,Mayorga vs Forrest 2 and Vargas vs Wright, but that now is not happening. They say that they're opening the vault on never seen classics, that vault must need a fuckin crowbar cause they aint showing quality fights that are classics.
Tszyu vs Mayweather
Tyson vs Foreman
Morales vs Hamed
JC Chavez vs A.Nelson
Quartey vs Trinidad or Whitaker
Tyson vs Douglass II

Chavez vs Whitaker II
J.Jackson vs Hopkins
Tszyu vs Randall
S.Johnston vs Mosley
T.Austin vs J.Tapia or P.Ayala
I have never wanted Vargas to win a fight in my life. I really don't respect his whole persona and the ultra testosterone act he portrays. I was so happy when Trinidad broke him and even more happier when De La Hoya ruined him. Vargas is the type of guy that believes by talking shit and getting in your face and mad dogging you is the real way a Mexican should act. He is an embarassment and by being K.O'd 3 times in his life he should of gotten it by now that shit talkin is for insecure fools. Fuck Vargas and his whole act. Thank you ODLH for showing us Mexicans what a real fighter is and does in the ring without talkin shit and not using STEROIDS. Remember when Vargas said referring to ODLH "The difference between this Mexican and that Mexican is that this Mexican has balls" and then he got KO'd and tested positive for steroids. Vargas or any other Mexican fighter that attempts to discredit or divide us a people gets no love from me.
If he doesn't fight again then he'll go out as one of the best fighters in the past 20 yrs hands down. Look at his resume: Molina,G.Hernadez, J.Paez, Ruelas,ChavezQarteylGonzalez,Trinidad,Carr,Camacho,Whitaker, vargas,Hopkins, MAyweather. If you don't respect him as a person , then if you are really not a boxing fan. He ducked no one and accepted all , how many fighters do you know that would take on that resume and risk an undefeated record. Hate him or love him , he showed that he had balls in a sport wherethe size your balls are always being questioned.
Honestly after you've watched ESPN classic for about a week you've basically seen everything they play the same fights over and over, Holyfield V Bowe is probley on atleast everyday
No shit, They play the same shit over and over again. They really need to play classic fights not espn 2 fights featuring the likes of Lawrence Clay Bey or Jason Litzau. They need to tone it down with all the Muhammd Ali programming, I know he is the most recognized fighter in the world but they overkill it to the point where you just get sick of the same fighter being featured over and over again. The voice over announcing really kills it for me especially when they actually show a good fight.
People will have fighters that they'll glorify to the very end, and will not listen to any reason if offered. Mayweather is undeafeated so that gives his supporters more encouragement to claim his greatness. I've followed boxing since I was 5yrs old and have seen and read about the greatest fighters of all time. Let me tell you something, Mayweather is not I repeat an all time great fighter with the fighters that he has faced. An undeafeated fighter does not him great, a fighter that has losses doesn't him average. There have been times when Mayweather looked great like Corrales, Hernandez,Gatti (so have 7 other fighters). However , there are times when he is an absolute bore: Sosa, Baldomir,Carlos Hernadez. Thebottom line is that the fighters he has faced and beaten does not only not make him an alltime great or in the top like i've read on this site, but it is far short of fighters such as De La Hoya,Trinidad, Hopkins,or even Whitaker. The truth is that because he has an undeafeated recor and has at times been reluctant to get in their and fight he has left much to be desired from a supposed all time great. A fighter like Whitaker with his defensive genius would get in the trenches and show what he really is all about. An undeafeated fighter does not equal an all time fighter. Please, don't insult the greatsof this sport with talk about Mayweather being in the top 20,10,or3. That right their is blasphemy.
caption who??? clearly a response to
"Please, don't insult the greatsof this sport with talk about Mayweather being in the top 20,10,or3. That right their is blasphemy."
pbf is best current fighter under winky/hop so Mayweather comes in somewhere between 1-3
You are reasonable because he is top 3 today , but not all time.
The saddest moment in boxing is when the three major networks Abc,Nbc, and Cbs decided that boxing was no longer a sport that should receive coverage. I have hundreds of fights in my collection that were from free TV and they are the type of fights that today you have to pay on cable or on PPV to see. The networks would rather show gymnastics, rodeo, golf,Nascar, horse racing, volleyball than boxing. A BIG middle finger goes to the executives that made the decison to kill boxing.
Sweet Pete his actual nickname, later changed to Sweet P by close unanimous decision. Whitaker was a slick boxer you used his movement to avoid contact but not in a running fashion. He would make mayweather miss and dig hooks into Mayweather's gut and make it a hard and dirty fight for Mayweather. Although I was not a big fan of his, I've grown to respect Whitaker more today as he was a great boxer that didn't have the power to ko but nevertheless never ran. He would get in the trenches and make it a dirty fight, that would be something Mayweather would not be able to handle.
Ok thanks for playing captain obvious.
Floyd is hands down the best fighter at 147 as well as in BOXING. Maybe I'd be one of the few that would contest and state that Wink is better but he's by no means far ahead because that's just favoritism if I stated that.
And you claiming he's exciting is your opinion. I think he is also to some degree when he fights coming forward.....but you keep stating that like it's fact when there's plenty of other guys who people would pay money to watch at 147.
Namely Miguel Cotto who's fights are a bit more cardiac in nature. he gets hurt, then comes back and finishes people. Floyd just walks over guys because he's a better fighter than literally everyone you could possibly pit him up against.
So you agree that Mayweather is not an alltime great? If so ,then you know boxing. You do know that Mayweather became #1 lb 4 lb because fighters like jones, Hopkins,Barrera, morales and de la hoya lost. So, by matter of elimination he became #1 not because of the fighters that he has beaten but because the other fighters ahead of him lost. The fighters ahead of him lost beacuse they took on risks and quality fighters.
Joan Guzman beat Manny Pacquiao???? That has got to be one of the funniest things Ive ever heard
It's not Guzman it's Agapito Sanchez (RIP) hitting Pac-man in the nuts. The fight ended in a tech-draw i believe. Hey ,Owen Rock Due us all a favor and post that dela hoya pic on your avatar real big for all to see. Those fuckin ropes!
Ummmm, Shane Mosley and Tito Trinidad.... the two guys that 'beat" him.
Ugh, Shane Mosley who has only one top notch victory in his career. Yes, he beat Oscar (115-113) but who else did he beat at welter. He didn't fight Tito,Quartey or Pernell. If by beating Oscar, that ranks him ahead of Oscar who fought everyone of relavance at WW, then that speaks volumes of Oscar as a fighter and his accomplishments. Tito never beat Oscar. Good Night.
That was a 2002 list. Ring Magazine writers voted.
So, ODLH and Tito would have changed...but not Pernell.
At that time, Oscar had losses to Tito and SSM. Tito had one loss to a HoF middleweight.
It was tough to rank Oscar higher, I guess. He was, at best, the 3rd best WW in his own era.
If you are saying that Pernell was the best out of the three, then that is hard to justify. Pernell's highlights at WW are the controversial draw with Chavez and the Mcgirt fights. If you are saying Mosley is , then you i question you.
Tv Azteca is a Mexican channel . If the fight is shown in the Us it will be shown on Azteca America which is like Tv azteca minus the Mexican commercials. If you live in an area with heavy spanish you should get this channel as part of your cable package.
David. Be mature. Please. People disagree on boxing opinions.
A panel of boxing writers chose Tito above Oscar. I'm not saying that it is right, wrong or otherwise. I was just posting what the resluts of the rankings were, and explaining to you what I thought the rationale may be why they had Tito that much higher than Oscar.
Oscar has lost against most of his best competition. Shane has lost against most of HIS best competition. Truth be told, Oscar didn't accomplish that much at WW. His best win was Quartey.
Shane Mosley accomplished what besides Oscar, what other fighter did he beat to deserve in your opinion to be rated higher than Oscar and at par with Tito. He did not beat any other top guys, no Trinidad,no Quartey and no Whitaker. He beat Rivera who Oscar had beatin ,A.Diaz and lost twice to Forrest. Oscar beat Whitaker ,Quartey and Trinidad. That is as good as it gets for someone that didn't accomplish much at WW. I'm mature, i was just being overly sarcastic.....My bad.
